My job is relocating to another part of town and my commute is going to drastically increase. If you know anyone who is looking for a trouble-free, like-new CRD, you may want to take a look at the Vehicles for Sale section of the forum. Go to: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=18312

I know that RFCRD traded his in last night...ordered a Chevy Silverado.

I guess you will be looking for a "VERY" high mileage vehicle?

I will probably be looking for very basic transportation. Honda Civic or the like.

I would love to know the trade in value he got. It would be nice to hear some real numbers instead of all the speculation...

The Chevy dealer would not do the trade until a Jeep Dealer paid top dollar for the CRD...

Man, this is only like $3k less than my folks paid for their new Limited in July of 2006.

If anyone needs to sell a CRD and the local dealers won't take it -- throw it on Ebay with Biodiesel as one of the keywords. I can almost guarantee someone from Portland or Seattle will snap it up for over the reserve.

But that is asking price and before negotiations. Trade in value would be around 18 large I bet, as RFCRD probably found out. Too bad he felt the need to bail out.

I hate to break it to you all, but I tried to trade mine in last year when I only had 10k on the ODO and NO DEALERSHIP offered more than $14,000 - they said that the word was out back then not to accept the CRD on trade and that the NADA Guides are WAY off as well as the KBB - both too high. The asking price is just that, asking price - they will never get close to that.

You think RFCRD took it like a man, and accepted 14 large for his? I don't.

Well, hate to hear the bad news, but perhaps there is a second CRD (used to park in my garage for when this one is worn out) in my future after all.

I'm not speaking for RFCRD's deal, just my extensive research last year about this. Heck, look on ebay right now, the low mileage 2005s all have buy it now prices below $18k - that's private party value, not trade-in value. Most of the bids on all of them only get up to $11k-$14k now for selling it yourself. All I'm saying is that one referenced above, in a link, as a resale for $23,855 is way off base and will never see a buyer in that price range.

Matter of fact, here is the KBB trade-in value for the $23,855 Sport that has no sunroof, no side airbags, no tow package, basically no options except cruise control:

http://www.kbb.com/KBB/UsedCars/Pricing ... nditions=0

$12,500 KBB trade-in value in Good condition - looks like KBB has recently revised their numbers to be more realistic.

Well, could be. The KBB trade in value for my 2006 is 16,875. That is an "in excellent" condition instead of "good" like the 2005. Kind of hard to stomach, but my Buick did the same thing. Still a great car. It's just that the bottom falls out from underneath any american made rig unless it is a Vette or something like it. Even Hummers take up the tail pipe.

Also know that the dealers who say they will give you KBB for your trade....that they are going by the "fair" market value...meaning they won't give you the good or excellent values....they give you the lowest which is fair.

For example, my 06 base limited with 12k has a trade-in value of
Fair
$16,465

The dealers disguise this in their commercials by saying "Kelly Blue Book fair market value"....which really just means the fair condition value.

It really comes down to either jump ship now and take your beating, or hang in there and see if things get worked out later. I started off with a large amount of equity and now I have none and in fact owe more on it then a dealer would put into the Liberty. Local wholesale is down to $12000 if you could talk them into trading, I blew my chance when dealer offered to put $15k back before Christmas. It is drive it out time.

Now for some speculation. In the last 10 days the price of gas has gone up about 20% or about 40 cents and the market will drop big time on all big SUV's and PU trucks, maybe then a fuel sipping diesel SUV will come back up in value. One can only hope.

my commute is going to drastically increase

Doesn't a longer commute favor keeping the CRD. I have a short commute (3 miles) and I drive a 4 cyl Japanese car for that. It beats the CRD a little on that commute. I prefer to drive the CRD on road trips where It equals or betters the Japanese car. If I had a longer commute, say over 10 miles, I would drive the CRD.

With the loss on trade-in and premium paid for the Japanese car a lot of even $3 per gallon diesel fuel could be purchased.

RUG (regular Unleaded Gas) has went up 20% in the last 10 days and 30% in the month and a half. You are correct about the cost offset, the $5000 or more loss to switch to a 30 mpg gasser would take 4 or 5 years to pay off even at $3 a gallon. Our CRD when driven at 65 MPH on the highway will get 30 to 33 MPG, but the around town is what is killing us. I figure next fall we may buy a third vehicle, a small cheap car for city driving if there is such a thing by then folks.

I've said this before but I've never got 30-33 mpg on the highway. My CRD is used for my daily commute of about 115 miles per day. My normal commute is about 75% highway and I'm getting about 24 mpg overall using the old school method of calculating mpg (pencil and paper using miles driven and gallons to fill 'er up). That said, I'm only a little disappointed in my CRD's mileage. If I got 30-33 I would be elated, but would still have concerns about long term reliability (i.e. above 100k).

I'm going to try to hang on to my CRD until 100k (about 2 more years) because I have an extended warranty. Then it's on to something else. If I take an unreasonable hit when my CRD and I depart ways, I'll never buy another Jeep for the rest of my life (Word). :x
