Post subject:  NEW- Airflow Snorkels Initial Buy-In!!!
Finally! After a LONG wait, the all-new Airflow Snorkels for the KJ's are in production. :D
Snorkels are available in Black, Light grey, or Green. (Personally, I'd stick with the black) Light grey would probably be preferable if you plan to paint the snorkel.
Airflow went with a 3.5" air system, instead of the original 3" design. The final redesigning process has been completed and they have beta tested 5 units. We are finally ready to go!

We are launching this new product with a first time buy-in exclusively for LOST members. It is NOT being announced anywhere else!
We will start taking orders on Monday, April 23rd. Cut-off date to get in on this special buy-in is May 15th.

Retail price for these snorkels is $399.00.

Shipping will be a flat rate of $20.00 per snorkel within the continental USA, so the total delivered price will be $355.00.

We will order snorkels at the end of the buy in period. (May 15th) It will take appx 6-8 weeks for the snorkels to ship from Airflow in Australia, (via ocean freight) through CA and then truck freight to here. We will ship out the snorkels from here directly to each customer.

The snorkel air ram actually removes most of the water from the airstream during rainy conditions. Pretty neat design.

It is quite easy to spin the air ram around backwards though if desired. It is a seperate piece entirely, so you can have it facing forward during dry weather and backwards during rain if you like.

It works because the rain droplets are really big and they hit the back of the snorkel face and run down to a lip which drains to the outside of the snorkel.

You're not stupid. Perhaps just not familiar with how snorkels work.
Water seperation is something that has been figured out on snorkels for a long time.
Pablo got it right. The link he posted talks about how the snorkels seperate water out.
The ardent cynic can still turn the scoop around backwards if he cannot believe... :wink:

The hood functions normally. A snorkel that had to be removed to open the hood would not be something we'd be selling- mainly because nobody would be buying it!

Depends on your jeep. It seems that different models of KJ's have the antenna in different locations. (Especially true with the AUS models)

If the snorkel interferes with the antenna at all, just relocate it with a simple aftermarket antenna. Easy enough. 8)

Besides the fact that it looks cool and to keep my intake out of water if I happen to be driving through 3 ft of water............are there any benefits to this? Like MPG? Dry air filter maybe?

Benefits:

1. Dry air filter- no more water getting sucked directly into the filter media.

2. More airflow, 150% more than stock they say. Plus some tout the RAM air effect as further increasing airflow. I don't think this applies much to the CRD-- the only reason the stock CRD box would pull air in straight from the front instead of using the 3.7 liter box that pulls it in up high is if Jeep engineer's were trying to use RAM airflow to get more air to the diesel to begin with. I can't think of any other reason the bean counters at DC would justify a seperate air intake just for the CRD-- or why the Jeep engineers would want to use an intake much more vulnerable to water injestion-- on a diesel no less. The CRD air intake is a hack to get more air in using RAM air induction to being with. The proof is the CRD owners who get water in the air filters-- that direct path RAM air is sucking all that water right into the filter media. If the snorkel pipe is indeed 150% the size of the original, the snorkel would still flow better than stock, regardless of a slight loss in RAM efficiency. I think the aussie's who installed this report 1-2 mpg gains in fuel mileage. Keep in mind they are running lifts, tires, roof racks and carrying who knows what around. I think with the new amsoil filter that flows better-- the mpg figure may go up. With the ORM, snorkel, and filter, you should get quite a boost on power and/or MPG (depending on what the evil ECM does).

3. In some applications that pull air in from under the hood, the air would be warmer than with this snorkel-- which pulls in cooler outisde air, but probably not with the CRD as it pulls air in straight from the front of the vehicle to begin with (albiet probably not enough with the ORM).

4. Cleaner air-- much less dirt up high where the intake is. In dry environments this will make the filter last longer. In AZ, this is the main reason I am considering this. I would be more likely to turn my snorkel around just to keep dirt from being blown straight into it, than from worrying about water ingestion.

Potential Downsides:

1. One question I have, because I am lazy.. is can I take the Jeep through the car wash with this thing on? My guess is no way.

2. I am also wondering if there is some way to run an antenna parrallel with and alongside the outside of the snorkel? When I say antenna... an antenna just needs to be a metal rod or length of wire, nothing fancy. It would seem like if there was a way to attach it to the outside of the snorkel and run the wire to it without it being seen or unsightly... I would be good to go.

3. With a stock Jeep, a snorkel will look poserish and you will get lots of dirty looks from people in TJ's who think you are some kinda Hummer H2 wannabes. Not that I would care, but the risk of vandalism is much higher as this will attract all sorts of attention to your vehicle. I would not take it out in public and leave it parked for long. You know some a-hole is going to pour his soda in the snorkel or try and rip the snorkel off.
