As the CRD's electrical load is increased, say by connecting an inverter which supplies a portable battery charger, does the CRD's engine speed increase in an attempt to meet this load? If not, would the inverter also draw from the battery trying to meet the load? Could the alternator or voltage regulator (is it internal?) be damaged if the portable battery charger powered by the inverter charges external batteries that were, say, 50 % discharged (I'm thinking high initial charging current) ?

Thanks!

I haven't looked very closely but I suspect the alternator runs at 2X engine speed so with the internal regulator (which are not great) you should achieve max charging rate at about 1500 engine rpm. The alternator construction has a lot to do with it but that should be close enough for practical purposes. If you really want (need) better control then go to an external regulated alternator and a 3-step regulator.
