Hey all....

Just thought I'd share the results of my work today. I went ahead and removed the facotry muffler and replaced it with a 2 1/2" section of piping. All in all it took about 40 minutes and here's the results.

Sound: At idle there is no discernable difference in volume but a slightly different tone. A hint of the 'drone' people talk about cruising on the highway but I actually like it...very subtle and I can hear how hard the engine's working...not just the turbo. The volume does kick up quite a bit when you are under load at low RPM....very noticeable there but sounds great. Still quiet enough that nobody notices that it's anything different.

Mileage(all per computer):

Factory muffler to work (about 50 highway miles decrease 1,500 ft elevation)- 29.7mpg
Factory muffler from work (opposite as above)- 27mpg
Straight pipe to work- Update tommorrow when I go
Straight pipe from work- 29.2mpg

Seat of the pants:
I can coast now!!!!! haha. Doesn't feel like I'm running with an exhaust brake anymore. Throttle response has improved a lot and feels much more "right."

I don't see a downside to doing this one. Especially since it cost me $12 worth of exhaust piping. I called and Midas will do this for $60 and a local exhaust shop said $40.

in addition to my other post (see below) I cannot beleave how much the stock muffler was acting like a exhaust brake either!!!

I just put on a Magnaflow... LOVE IT!!! (pt # 12226)

I have been a long time fan of the Flowmaster, every truck I've had I’ve put one on. However after looking at the inside of the Flowmaster for only 1 sec it was clear.. Why would anybody put a Chambered muffler on a Diesel?? The whole point is to let it flow better, and I don’t see how chambers would be better vs. a free flow through design. My shop offered either a Borla or Magnaflow for the same price, they said up front that the Borla would be much louder and could cause a drone in the cab. So I went with the Magnaflow. I must say, she "pop's" now! If your only planning one mod on you Libby it should be this one. Best $150 I’ve spent on her.

Leg burning time with that setup above. It looks great, but just doesn't feel safe with that sticking out.

I wonder if above direct-pipe setup will work with Gas KJ? any ideas?

Personally I would crush that on a rock pretty quick.

on the Diesel - the Turbo acts as a muffler - the muffler underneath is an extra

on gas - that's it - if you pull the muffler out - it'll be a lot louder and if you drop the backpressure enough you can burn exhaust valves. (although headers and a Flowmaster work really well)

I have been planning to get magnaflow muffler only, for like $100 to get better sound. I don't care about increasing MPG, if it stays the same, it's enough for me.
I actually planned to remove the muffler just to test the sound, rev it a little bit and take a tour of 1 mile to see how it feels and sounds.. Good thing I didn't do it then.. Sorry to pull this off topic. Thanks.

I guess so. But with all that salt we are running through in the winter, it could be better to get that. You should see my muffler.. It is rust field.

PS, mine is 04, look at my uncle's 06 in the background, it is about 3 months old in that picture-- i will take a picture after about a year, after winter, to see how it looks..

lol how many pics did you have to take to get both in one shot?? :D nice!

thats what my stock one looked like when it came off last Sat. In my opinion, i beleave with any top brand aftermarket mufffler, the unit itself would fail before the salt "burned" throught it... so i think it really just comes down to looks.

Well I just got to work so I thought I'd post a mileage update for my reutrn trip after the muffler was taken off.

Mileage to work: 32.9 (per computer, up from 29.7)

And no, I haven't done any other mods yet. I want to wait until I finish my first tank of fuel off so I have a baseline to work with. Then the CAT fuel filter, EHM, and probably the ORM (among fixing the air intake...there has to be a better way)

You are right.
Looks like 14256 is about $100 and 12226 is about $50. plus installation. I wonder if there is a such a huge difference. And if I am not getting a good sound with either one of these, there is really no reason for replacing them, if it all comes down to looks..

not looks or sound... its all about backpressure and fuel miles. but the sound is nice.

as you are now, get going to 50mph let off the gas ans see how long it takes you to coast down to 30mph.

replace your muffler and take that time and x by 10!

But I am running gas, not CRD. I always thought my KJ rolled pretty free when coasting without need of extra acceleration. Of course I wouldn't mind getting extra few hundred feet coasting. :lol:

Just had a MagnaFlow 12256 muffler installed - this muffler is 4" longer than the 12226; 2-1/2 in and out, 18" body and 24" overall - fit great. Sound is the same, if not a little quieter.

Seat of the pants performance seems a little better - the throttle response seems quicker. I'll post back mileage difference soon on this one. I don't know how this one will compare to the 12226 performance wise, but there is definitely NO offensive noise at all. However, the straight pipe is definitely cheaper!

Aero Turbine is the only way to go, it actually creates a vaccum out of the exhaust! $300 is significantly more though...
