Is this the differential we have on the CRD. Reason I ask is that I want to change the fluid and need to find out if I require the friction modifier.

Yes you need the friction modifier

I think it depends on the year. If I remember correctly it was standard in 2005 and almost impossible to find in 2006.

It was not an option in 06.

Track Loc is a limited slip differential that requires an additive when you change diff oil.

OK, this isn't very conclusive. It's certainly not an option I selected. Is there a visible way to tell?

What year is your CRD :?: If it's a 06 then you have ESP and it was not even available. You can have your dealer's parts department print out a "build sheet" giving you all the original equiptment on your jeep :!:

Look on the rear axle,if there is a green band around one of the axle tubs that says "trac lok" then you got it,if not you don't.Or you can take your VIN in and get a build sheet from a dealer that lists all the items on your KJ.

Power*brake it, until you get some wheel spin.

One black mark = open differential.

Two black marks = trac-lok differential. Image

The trac-lok was an item I had to have on the CRD and on all the CTD's I've owned in the past.

Would any harm be done if you put friction modifier in a non limited slip diff?

If not, then if in doubt, put the modifier in anyway.
