At several different speeds, the engine skips and sputters, gives a loud rattle, then shoots out a large plume of black smoke and continues on. I hope this isn't a serious problem.

I had the water in fuel light come on and drained the system twice. It is still on. I was going to the dealership for that.

I have 5700 miles on the Jeep.

Had those same symptoms come up on diesels that really had water in the fuel system. If it really is there soon you'll may blow the tips off your injectors.

Yep sounds like you are getting some crappy fuel to me. Try to find a different station with some high quality diesel fuel.

Turns out I did have water in the fuel and a bad sensor. Dealer replaced the sensor. Also, got a bad EGR valve. It listed codes 101, 299, and 401 for the egr valve. Also had codes 2264 and 93. Dealer said he had to drain the cooling system to replace the EGR valve. He said he had to have approval from DC before he could order the egr vavle. It took four and one-half days, but it runs good again.
