I finally got rid of the stock tires before winter hits. I'd researched a bunch of possibilities and settled on the Yokohama Geolander (a lot of letters for those raised white letter sidewalls). I made an appointment at Discount Tire and went on in today. They only had 2 in stock, so they offered me the Michelin Cross Terrain (from what I'd read online, that is a top-of-the-line tire for this car and the way I use it) for the same price. The Cross-Terrains were too much when i was initially looking, so I just dismissed them - despite their 60 or 80K mile treadwear.

Now that I have them, I can't believe how quiet they are - it's almost eerie. I didn't realize that the stock tires were relatively noisy - I was too busy focusing on how they had no traction, stunk in the snow, etc.!

You made a good decision by default...the Geolanders tend to be out of round...the Michelins will be nice and round and last much longer.

BKH, do you have an update on the Cross-terrains? They're on my short-list for replacing the crapyear wranglers...those or BFG Radial Long Trails...

I'll be thinking of getting a set of Yoko Geolander M/T+ on steelies for trailing...hadn't heard the out of round thing....I have Yoko Geo I/T+ for winter...they're an awesome tire!

Cheers,
Duey

I have the BFG radial long trail ........awesome tires, very quite, wear well, and give good traction in the snow and ice and perform decent off road.(not mud tires by any means though)

Ive had the long trails on several jeeps now and swear by them, its the only new tire I will ever buy for the jeep.

I have about 7,000 miles on the Michelins now. They were fantastic this past winter - even giving me enough traction to pull a Lincoln Navigator out of a snowdrift (much to the embarrassment of the Navigator's owner). The tires started out quiet, but the front ones started becoming noisy as came close to rotation time. When I rotated the tires, the quiet returned. Hopefully the tires that are now on the back will wear down to their past, quiet levels. The alignment is spot-on, so I'm hoping the noise does not come back.

So far, I'm really happy with them, except for initial front tires getting noisy. No gas mileage change from the OEM tires. I'd buy them again.

Someone slashed my Goodyears about a month ago. I went with the Yoko Geolanders as replacements and so far so good. Planning a trip out to some property I own in New Mexico over Memorial Day. It's out in serious 4X4 country. We'll see how the new tires work.

I'll second the cross terrain Michlins tires. I have 71000 on my 02 liberty. second set since new , replace OEM art 59K now just turned 130K and still have good tread left , enough to get thru the summer. If i keep the liberty thru next year I will replace them just before the winter. BTY I do rotation of 4 tires every 8 to 10 thousand miles.

You really can't go wrong with Michelin tires - I think they one of the best (if not THE best) tire company out there. Good traction, quiet, and extremely long-wearing. Maybe that's why I don't work for Firestone anymore! And I think the quality of BFG has improved since Michelin bought them as well ..... congrats! I traded my factory Goodyear tires for the Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmors - not bad tires, but I don't think I'll get them again. At least I only paid 300 or so for all for with the trade-in credit from my new factory tires (I left the dealership & went to the tire dealer - had 18 miles on the stockers LOL)

245/70/16 is as big as you can go without a lift and without rubbing. I love mine and they make a HUGE difference in vehicle handling and stability. Much stiffer side walls than the OEM tires.

My speedo was off from the factory. +4 mph. my tires are .25 of an inch bigger than the OEM. They didn't change a thing. However, check your speedo before you change tires and make the dealer fix it under warranty. They won't look at it with any but the OEM size tires.

Hi Zonie,

So your dealer fixed your speedometer? Most vehicles I've come across don't have an adjustment for this. If the KJ does, that would be nice.

No, my dealer didn't fix it. I'd changed tires by the time I mentioned it. They told me that because I didn't have the stock size tire they wouldn't fix it under warranty. I figured it wasn't worth the hassle at that point.
