 Post subject: First Cleaning of MAP Sensor at 31000 miles

Well, I received my Scanguage over the weekend so I firgured I clean the MAP senor and do the ORM today. I was surprised to see that the MAP sensor was not that gunked up after nearly 31000 miles.

When I removed it the sensor was not blocked up like many of the photos I have seen. There was no oil present, just some soot. But, I could see through the sensor, it was not blocked. I cleaned it up with a couple of blasts of cleaner.

I have not done any mods (until today) to the engine compartment of the CRD. It was manufactured in May 2005 and the only work that has been done (beside routine maintenance) is the F37 recall and the recall for the ball joints. I have never had the EGR replaced.

Is there some rationale reason that I don't appear to get the soot buildup that many are seeing? I have measured my fuel mileage from day 1 and it has been fairly consistent based on the type of driving and season. I get fuel from a variety of places.

I will be curious to see if the MAP cleaning and ORM will do anything for me.

Thoughts?

I just cleaned mine today too.. I have about 16K and mine was as clogged as it could get. My EGR valve went out last night so I figured I might as well do some work. I use ULSD and B20 whenever I can find it so i thought I was probably doing ok on the gunk... but the EGR going out was a good indicator to me that I needed to do some cleaning.

I can't locally get biodiesel, so the only time it has had biodiesel in it was it came off of the lot in June 2005. I do notice a fairly significant difference in MPG based on where I purchase the fuel. Unfortunately, the place closest to me has the fuel that yields the worst MPG performance (2 miles per gallon less).

I have done nothing to reduce the soot at the MAP sensor. Would running biodiesel increase the amount of soot in the system versus running straight diesel? I wouldn't think so, but what do I know. Are EGR's being replaced by folks running straight diesel, biodiesel, both?

since i swiched to B-100 i have been soot free... the facts are that it does burn cleaner... but is the the Bio, ORM, EHM or "D" All of the above that has kept my motor soot free...

just my thoughts...

In non-EGR vehicles, biodiesel is supposed to dramatically reduce soot (among other emissions), while increasing NOX. Would think bio means less soot in an EGR vehicle.

for what it is worth, there appear to have been some studies showing increased NOx and some that do not show an increase, so that particular bit of folklore is in question yet.

And to add to the fire of NOx... There is no proof that higher NOx is bad... "they" are still trying to find out if its harmfull.

I also recently cleaned my MAP sensor after 31K and found the exact same situation...no oil, light soot, and space through the sides. Like you I expected a lot worse and was considering trying to have the EGR cleaned but now, based on the lack of build up on the MAP sensor, I wonder if it even needs it. I also do not have any engine mods done so all this oily gunk I see from others' EHM mods etc., leaves me scratching my head because unless there is something I am missing, I don't believe that I have the oily mess like everyone else. Anyone else have any thoughts?
