Post subject:  Rear Diff Failure

I took my Libby in today with 48K miles on it to get one of my free oil changes. They offered me some 45K checkup for $318. I looked it over, and the only thing I had not done in a while was change the dff fluids. Though getting the chassis greased was tempting.

I any case, I said I would pay for a diff fluid change, because I just did not have tme right now. They came back and said a gear was bad in the rear diff. They were ordering the parts and would fix it tomorrow for the $100 deductible with the 100K mile warranty. I didn't argue. It won't cost me any more, and since I have a lift and oversize tires, I was just grateful they didn't try and pawn if off on that. So, even though the fluid change is over priced, it worked out OK for me on this one. :D

I'm curious. What exactly on the chassis were they going to grease?

Did they show you what was bad? Are they low on work?

Sorry I just dont trust any dealerships, besides diffs rarely fail, and if there was something wrong you probably would have noticed a noise at least?

Dealer service at my local place in NH for front/rear 4x4 diff/yoke is approx $ 200. Trans fluid flush is about $ 125 more.

Answers to questions...............

The  above was for the "grease the chassis" item on the list. I asked, what are we going to grease exactly? As we went through the list, it went something like this:
- Grease the chassis? Uhm......no
- Air Filter - Don't you dare touch my AMsoil filter!
- Brakes - Already replaced them.
- Tires - Brand new
- Suspension - Uhm.....it's all mine and you're not going to support it anyway, so why bother?
- Oil change - that's free anyway

Anyway, I said OK to letting them change the diff fluids. As to what happened, I'm not certain. I had not heard any strange noises, and had just driven 250 why miles two days before. It doesn't change the charge to me though. I noted that since the gears were bad, and since you have to change the diff fluid when you change the gears, I guess I don't have to pay for a diff fluid change anymore. Right? They agreed. So, I get a rebuilt diff and it really isn't costing me any more than I was paying anyway. SO I"m OK with it.

Oh, one more thing. They came back and asked me if I knew the check engine light was on? I said, "Oh, it's not flashing, so I'll check it when I get home. I don't want to pay to have it checked unless there's a real problem." Gee, I wondering what was causing this light?

The mechanic said the spider gear had chips missing and there was debris in the pan on the rear diff. So they rebuilt it. That's all I got from them and it cost me about the same as just changing fluid, so I'm OK with it.

If they had it on the lift and put the transmission in drive to listen to the rear axle the check engine light comes on. I thought I heard some strange noises and had mine up on jacks put it in gear and the check engine light came on. The dealer said that was normal and it cleared itself.
