Post subject:  The few, the proud, the KJ CRD owners.
Well, since Jeep and/or parent company has decided not to continue making our preferred mode of transportation, I've a question for everyone:

How many plan to hold onto the CRD they have now and run it till hover-cars are available, and how many plan on bowing out once the warranty is gone?

I plan on running mine into the earth, literally and figuratively. Many folks on here seem unhappy with their rigs but, I really really like mine. It takes my family just about any where on the planet we want to go, it gets better mileage than a gasser, has power to spare, and is just plain fun to drive. This is my first diesel vehicle and I'm very happy with it.

I've had to take mine in for recalls and minor maintenance just like everybody else but, all and all it's been a very reliable vehicle that I trust to get my family and I out to wherever and back again. :D

Mine is a keeper!!!!

I do think it will become or has started to become a "cult car". I agree with cow in that as soon as the price dips, I will buy another for the fun of it. The Libby will be rotated out of my wife's daily driver and she gets to "pick" her next one all by herself!! That should be fun to watch!

I have two small kids that are going to be driving in about... OMG my daughter will drive in about 5-6 years where has the time gone. Anyway, for her to be able to drive a 6-7 y.o. car that has been maintained since new and cared for is our goal.

A car is a tool, a machine. It is to be used and maintained like any other tool. Yet it is still a tool!

Will parts be available at the local Auto-Zone?? Maybe/maybe not. I am not afraid of the VM engine's parts availability.

I bought an old Benz that most parts have to be purchased online or scavenged. Yes there were hundreds of thousands of the W126 model built.

There were also hundreds of thousands of the Liberty built - as gassers here in the U.S. The only question on parts should be engine and maybe tranny but even the later was used in other applications. And, the VM engines were used OUS applications for years!

SO, I will keep her. Forever unless she gets totaled!

Definitely going to keep. More people seem to like them than not...with some of the info here to fix the quirks. Since the US is so S L O W to bring Economy Diesels to this market ( everything else is $35,000+ ) in our class, I think for the most part we made a good purchase. As long as "parts" don't become a serious issue, I will ride it out.

Since the Libby is a vehicle which is ideal for my use, I'll be keeping it for quite awhile. The only thing that would be discouraging would be if parts become a real issue. (Mostly the engine parts--I expect the transmission and driveline parts will be easily obtained). Hopefully, I'll avoid any problems of the type dharv (the guy in Alberta who has the unknown fuel system problem) has just experienced. Unfortunately, now that Cerebrus is running Chrysler, I doubt we will see much in the way of innovation from Chrysler.

I typically turn vehicles every couple of years, but my CRD is the most entertaining vehicle I've had in awhile. It meets my needs so well. It has plenty of room, it's comfortable, gets great fuel economy (for an SUV), and is a wonderful conversation piece.

Anything with a diesel engine around here carries a premium price, so if/when I get tired of it, I won't have any issues getting rid of it for a decent price.

I'm planning on keeping it to tow my trailer, explore some dirt roads (nothing extreme...don't have skids...yet!), drive back and forth to work, and perhaps set up a biodiesel processor and make my own fuel.

The parts aren't that hard to find given that the Liberty is a pretty popular vehicle. The tranny is in use in TONS of Hemi pickups. The only unknown is the VM Motori engine, but it's used heavily in Europe in lots of applications. They are even building an engine for Cadillac.

Worse case scenario, I take it over to the Nashville Auto Diesel College (http://www.nadc.edu/) which is a highly respected institution. I'm sure they would love a good diesel project over there, especially given the rarity of the CRD. I'm sure they have some bright students over there that could fix it right up even if they had to engineer something to get it done. After all, how often do they get a chance to work on a VM Motori engine?? :)

Honestly, I'm more worried about the transmission and transfer case than I am the engine. I'm betting the engine will outlast all the drive components and chassis.

I will keep mine forever or until something better comes along,.. if something better comes along.

The only things that could tempt me to get rid of it:
1. A JK 4door CRD.
2. A JK gladiator CRD.
3. A FJ with a CAT motor. Yeah it is ugly but I would probably take anything with a little CAT motor and 4x4, provided it cost less than a gillion dollars.

Even if I bought one of these, I might still keep the Libby. I don't like DCX service and sloppy engineering on this vehicle, but it is working now.

The 300SD... that was a nice car. Those old MB's had style and were built. Great seats. Some of the new MB's are nice, but the quality is just not the same as some of the old ones.

I'm in it til the flying car..... check out www.moller.com They got a 70% ethanol 30% water mix to run in their rotary engines not too long ago.

I'll be keeping mine for a long time for all of the reasons already listed. I'm still hoping I'll have the option to add a 4 door Wrangler Rubicon CRD sometime in the future.

Its a keeper, Im gonna run the rings out of it...replace them and start over again. Maybe one day stuff the heavy duty tranny in there what was it the 68RE? with autostick. If the body rusts off of it I will stuff the motor in something else.

Its not going anywhere.

It seems that many of the haters have dumped theirs CRD's off (although many still come back to complain about how much they hated them).

I love this thing and look forward to the rumble every morning when I start it up! I also love the looks I get when I pull up to the diesel pump and start filling up. The look you get from Duramax/Powerstroke/Cummins guy when he sees you putting diesel in a jeep are priceless. So far no one has asked if I know that is diesel I am filling up with.

My plan is to look at them dumbly and say "but this pump is so much cheaper than those other ones..."

I love my CRD! I am 5,000 miles past the warranty but I don't care. I am not worried about it at all. My wife gets really annoyed when she goes to Oregon (they pump your gas )because they look at her like she is stupid pulling up to the wrong pump. She sat in front of a diesel pump for a few minutes last time and nobody would come out, just then this guy comes over thinking he was so smart and she was an idiot and says " Um, this is a diesel pump mam" She said, " I know, just fill it up :roll: "

As I've said before, I'm gonna give this to my son, currently 2.5 years old.

He'll love it in 2000whenever when off-road capability will be limited to the military because the lawyers run everything...or the EPA has outlawed cars with any decent Torque...or all jeeps are crappy....or petroleum is so expensive that old,cool cars are impossible to own but he'll make his own biodiesel....

Trust me, this is one to keep and pass on. Imagine if your dad gave you his old GTO or his Indian motorcycle when you were 18. By 2022, this Jeep will be THAT cool because technology/economy/legalities will have changed SO much.

Plus, I imagine he'll get plenty of @$$ in a retro Jeep at 18.

I never hated my CRD just the idots at DCX. I love my "libby" I plan on my 8 year old son driving and wheeling it. If I am not still driving it.

Bio I'm with you on the kid getting the girls with a retro Jeep.

Mines a keeper, I've only once traded in a vehicle. I keep my vehicles at least 10 years. Usually give em away or have a wrecker pick em up.

I'm going to drive my CRD until the body falls off. Then I'm going to put the engine in a TJ body and drive it another 500k.
