Before I pop for a Scan Gauge II I thought I would ask here what other choices are available. Certainly the auto parts stores have a variety for reading, settiing and testing that run all sorts of prices but are there other more elegant and cost effective solutions available for a laptop, a smart phone or a pocket PC? Inquiring minds want to know.

because of the conflicting Engine control implementation and Chrysler fix - most will either not read - or lock up pretty quickly. (one of the Ebay store guys was on the north side of town - he tested 1/2 dozen on mine and decided to add the CRD to the 'does not work' list)

I think most folks are going with the Scangauge II - and it sounds like it works for a while and then locks up, there are a couple of reports of good results on the Autoxray EZ6000 (but I think that's expensive for my plans), 1 vote for an ELM323 - but that's an interface chip you need software to run it but that's apparently shareware. And on the ORM circuit thread the Actron ODB II Pocket scan (on Amazon ~$50)

The Scangauge II still sounds like the best features for the price even if it has occasional lockups.

I have the Scangage II, and its not a matter of the gage locking up, the onboard computer stops sending data to the test port. This is becuase the way DC has interfaced their "Body" computer to the "engine" computer. The longest I get on mine is about 50 minutes, and it seems the longest is about the 4th drive cycle.

I picked up mine for $35 + S/H on EBay - just search for 'Jeep scan tool'. I have an equivalent one for our VWs, and they both do exactly what they say they will - scan trouble codes and allow you to clear them, nothing more or less.

I bought an Innova scanner to keep in back of the CRD to clear the code in case i ever have to have it towed from the side of the road. If it reads another disconnected MAF sensor some eyebrows might be raised even though the diesel tech there is totally cool and thinks reducing the EGR soot is a good idea, I don't know all the service reps there.
