I spoke with one of the local dealers in Renovo, PA (K&L) and asked what it would cost me to have the timing belt changed when the time comes, it came to $200 labor $241 parts for a total of $441. They said it was a 4 hour job. I thought that was super reasonable! I also contacted Brandywine Chrysler Jeep in Smyrna, DE and they said $723.00. I like the numbers of the place in Renovo

They sell and service Dodge and Chevy diesel trucks as well as Chrysler and Chevy cars. Diesels are super popular up there, they sell and service quite a few diesels, and I know they regularly see CRD's as there are a few that run around up there.

I agree. The thing about the small town up there is that it is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, everything from food to living is cheaper up there, so I am not surprised that their labor is cheaper too. I was thinking the same thing, $50/hr labor is GREAT!

Belt?
I wasn't even aware that this engine used a belt. I don't recall seeing
anything about it on the maintenance schedule.
Is the injection pump driven by the timing belt?

Anyway, if it is indeed a belt, it shouldn't be that hard to do being a front
engine rear drive vehicle.

Timing belt, I believe the change interval is 100k.

Yep they have a belt driven dual overhead cam and yes the belt drives the CP3 pump.

There are balance shafts, but if I remember correctly, they are gear driven off the crank.

Does anyone know FOR SURE what the interval is???
I don't want to completely trash this engine from a broken timing belt (The pistons and valves will hit-massive bucks lost!)

This engine should have gear to gear, stupid belts :(
I've seen gear to gear kits for the Land Rover TDI Discovery---WISH we had one too...

Yes, indeed, it does have a belt. 100,000 miles is the same interval as the post-'03 VWs, for whatever that is worth.

And flash, it isn't that hard, but if it is anything like the VW, it can be tricky for a tech too full of himself, as there are certain, er, quirks, that look to the uninformed to be no big deal, but if done sloppily, result in big headaches. For example, the engine falling out of the engine bay onto the pavement as you steam down the highway. Or the new belt breaking after only 10,000 miles or so. In short, not a job you want performed by just anybody.

It is also likely one of those jobs you do NOT want to put off. Save your pennies if you must to do it when due, but if the belt breaks because you ignored the change interval, plan on a whole new engine for probably around 5 Gs, as the valves will break off when hit by the pistons. They will then bash around and pound crap outta the head, break pistons, bend rods, maybe even the crank, and possibly gouge the cylinder walls, leaving no part of value undestroyed save perhaps for the injection pump and the water pump. Debris blown out the exhaust could even kill the turbo. Sounds expensive, eh?

Next question...

Is the belt tensioner Spring or Hydraulic?

Before the CRD came out I watched the training tape at the Jeep dealer. I don't remember the details of it, but I know that it said something in the valve train (lifter maybe?) was designed to break so nothing else got damaged.

Wow! I have no idea how one might prevent other damage when a valve stopped in mid-stroke because the cam quit turning smacks into a piston driven by the vehicle momentum. If VM found a way to do that, my hat's off to 'em, but you'll forgive my unwillingness to prove it one way or the other with MY engine.

Does anyone know if the water pump is driven by the timing belt ? Luckily, my lil' CRD has only had routine oil & fuel filter changes performed by me and an EGR and F37 at the dealer.

If the water pump is timing belt driven, better knock it out as well.

Greg
