How many drivers out there like the feel of 3rd gear with the torque converter locked? Does anyone else hit the OD OFF button when the speed limit is 40-50 mph and just cruise around in 3rd? |

I like the ommph but not the mileage at 50, but I DO like the od off around town (35-45). However, I think the jury is out on the mileage for "city driving" with OD off. Some said that you are better off with the OD off others not. I don't get to drive it much, so I tend to ,ahem, "play" a bit when I DO get it! |

I do it religiously. Half of my 20 mile commute is 45 mph on open road, and cruising steady state at 45mph with OD off definitely improved fuel mileage. Stop and go in town doesn't really make a difference. I end up using it like a shifter button. When I hit one long downhill I turn OD back on and basically let it coast, then when I go back up the other side turn it off again so it's in lockup climbing the hill. Also fun when you get on the interstate, let that beast wind up to hit 65, then turn OD back on. ![]() |

I lock it out of OD quite regularly because I live on hilly gravel roads. I believe it handles and performs better doing that. I also keep my Cherokee out of OD for the same reason. Usually run these roads 45-55 and the RPM's are perfect by locking out the OD. Else, the auto would be hunting for the right gear all the time. That is not good for any tranny. I do it quite a bit, but not always, when in town. Have not noticed much difference in town. And since my CRD is averaging 26-27 mpg summer and 24-25 mpg winter, given the conditions I drive it in, must be doing something somewhat right. |
