Post subject:  ABS light

When braking on rough terrain (so far the parking lot at work...) the ABS light will come on. I think it happens when the ABS should actually engage, like pressure comes off of one tire and the amount of brake applied would make the ABS work...is this normal? I hope not...just thought I would ask around before I go the dealership (always a scary thing). I am wondering if I have a suspension problem that is not keeping downward pressure upon cornering or bumps ( I am not talking off road either...driveway, parking lot, etc.) as I have heard a noise in the rear. Heard it this morning backing out of my flat driveway on to the gravel road, heard a short series of 3 light clunks (hard to describe sound) just as I initiated the turn in reverse...but no ABS light...lordy I think everyone elses problems with the CRD have made me hypersensitive! anyhow, what do you think...

Ordered the Frankenlift today...OME all around...might not install it for a while, would hate to have warranty issues...any experiences with warranties after a mild lift?

So when I am tearin' around in the winter or legitamate on road braking in the winter, the ABS light will come on? And it will take a few key start cycles (assuming that is what made it go off) to go away? Hmmm, sounds silly to me. Every time any one leaves my parents driveway with snow on the ground the ABS grinds all the way down the driveway for example...this cant really be normal on a vehicle, ABS lights up everytime it deploys? Unless it can sense that all 4 brakes are not under the same load, but that is also not the case under "normal conditions," i.e. one set of tires on pavement the other on snow pack, we have all been in that situation. Seems just plain goofy to me.

Now wait a minute, I don't recall you saying it didn't turn off. It winks on when working then it goes off again. If it is staying on I would think that you might have a faulty wheel sensor.

After hard acceleration my ABS and Parking lights come on and wont go off till a restart, they throw no codes on my scangauge. Might take it in sometime, its not power train though so I probably wont get warranty on it, who knows.

thanks..now i know how it should normally operate...it did stay on for a few starts. Add to the list of things to bring to the dealer's attention.

ABS light

I doubt they will do a darn thing about the leaking oil pan plug

I have had the TC replaced (previous owner under recall) but I do not think they replaced the tranny filter and associated gizzmos and I do have delayed engagement when shifting in the morning for the first time... o how easy it is to swap tranny's in a CJ.....

They should have replaced the filters with the TC but maybe not the pump. Go for the pump.

If the dealer serviced it they should be responsible for the leaky plug. There are a lot of plugs that have been fouled up during oil change and it is pretty much a new tap job or a new pan. I am not looking forward to my first oil change but plan on getting the Fumoto in when I do then never touching it again.

When this occurs does your odometer stop incrementing?

I believe it still works, never paid attention. Will let you know.

Johnboy,
If the odometer stops chances are good that the problem is the speed sensor on the rear differential.

bbertram,
If the parking lights are coming on the switch that is connected to the light/wiper stalk may be the culprit. It is often the cause of really strange electrical behavior.

If your odometer is stopped when the ABS brake light is on its probably the front left ABS sensor, I just had this and just got it replaced, $297 for the ABS hub assembly, apparently the hub and sensor are only available as one part, the sensor goes right into the hub.

I've been having this intermittently, like once a month to once every two months. Almost always occurs as soon as I set out, or within about 10 minutes of setting off. When it happens, restarting clears the brake and ABS light. If I don't restart, the odometer does not increment, speedo works fine. I can't find any other issues. I think the ABS is still working, but haven't confirmed.

Did yours fail completely or was it intermittent?

Yeah, mine would rarely go off, usually for a few mins at a time, then go right back on again, odometer would be frozen, but speedo was unaffected.

My odometer doesn't go up but my speedo works too. It happens almost every time I drive it. I can feel my ABS kicking in from time to time over rough sections of pavement, potholes and such. Not sure if thats normal or not or if its not then its been this way for a while I think. Restarting always clears the lights till the next bump. I like the odometer not working, makes my warranty last longer, I'm on my last 1200 kms, lol.

I was in Dallas last week and the ABS and brake lights came on, odometer stopped. From the feel the problem is with the left front sensor. Will find out later.

Wheel sensors seem to be a problem. At least the only one I have had with my '06 CRD.

Lost a wheel speed sensor early on. Lost one again last month. Been waiting for about a month for replacement. Probably one in the warehouse, but the dealer said Five Star is handling it and they will send part. No way to track part that way.

Giving them a call later today and see if dealer knows part status yet.

My ABS issue is so intermittent (one every month or two), that I'm going to live with it until it craps out completely.

Has anyone been able to retrieve any codes when it occurs?

Turns out the current problem is the sensor in the rear differential. The service tech said the code was for the rear left and right sensors, he noted that there was only one sensor.

Johnboy,
What was the problem?
