My '05 CRD's transmission made a loud 'Thud' twice this week. Both times I was on the highway cruising along at around 60-65 MPH overdrive on when the transmission when *thud* and the RPMs jumped up to like 3,000-3500 RPM. It's as if it just decided for no reason at all to go out of overdrive or something. The CRD will jolt suddenly when this occurs and it scared me and my wife. No codes appeared on the ScanGaugeII. The first time this occured when I had Cruise control on. The second time I was approaching stopped traffic and had only let off the accelerator pedal for a second when it occured.

Any ideas?

It sounds like the lock-up clutch is not disengaging right or is failing to engage in a timely manner. Mine did this once on the highway at 63-65mph-- the engine reved high and then slam! On a few other occasions before this it would go in and out of lockup in rapid succession. Felt like sitting on a highpowered machine gun turrent or like I was riding a horse that was bucking (also at 55-65).

1. Have you had F37 done? If not, maybe it is time.
2. Have you made sure your tranny fluid is ok? If not check it: in park motor running, level ground.
3. The software may have "learned" improperly and may need to be reset. In other words the software maybe buggy and since it tries to guess what to do based on your "driving style" it may have a bug in it. Resting the computer may make it go away.

You will probably need to take it to a dealer or tranny shop to get this fixed/diagnosed. My vote would be a tranny shop that works on Dodge pickups. Unless the problem is reproducible on demand the dealer will not fix it. They may, however, reset your computer to help eliminate number 3 above. If F37 has not been done, they may agree to do that. A seal maybe torn in the trany or the torque converter maybe on its way out. Niether of which throw codes until the problem is severe.

Were you on the flat or going downhill? This transmission does downshift on the downhill coast if it gets going too freewheeling. I have had it happen a couple of times and it is always an eye opener.

Pablo.. thanks for the info. I will check my fluid level here in a bit. I bought my CRD used and I'm the second owner. The Jeep website says that there are no outstanding recalls and the dealership said they did either a F37 or F31 on it. There isn't a sticker on my fuse box in the engine bay. Maybe I haven't had the F37 done. I don't know. I have the 7/70 limited warranty and am still covered under the full 3/36 (i have 21k miles). I'll take it to the dealer and see what's up.

I was going up a very very slight incline with the cruise control on for the first time. I was coasting down from 65mph due to traffic jam infront of me (Gotta love Dallas!) when the 2nd time occured. Maybe the 'freewheeling' caused that one? Whatever it is.. it scared the you know what out of me.

My Crd has done the exact same thing In the last week twice in two hundred miles, Just rolling along down the highway 60 65 MPH 1500-2000 rpm 5th gear and whammo huge shudder and shake rpms up to 3000-3500< fluid level is good fresh ATF+4 no codes thrown. My Crd has had F-37 done prior to my purcahse.Dealer here thinks it may be TQ unlocking and locking or going away but this was only the service mangers thoughts. He will have one of his senior Tranny techs talk with me on Tuesday about it,hope it lasts that long. May be I can swing a deal with them to install a sun coast or other after market TQ if it gets that to that point kind of a bummer I have a long trip at the end of August and I don't need a break down on the way to Lee Vining.I will fill you in later George.

nix & flatfender:

Mine was doing this in the early stages. Mostly rolling-stop, neutral-drop kind of experience (be careful on rain-slick streets, spun me out a couple of times when it grabbed). This was @ 9 months before the F-37 recall and DCX didn't have a clue as to a cause or fix. They started by replacing the transmission filters as it was believed it may be fluid starved (leaking pick-up tube) and it was already known to possibly have been built with defective filters. The problem went away with the filter change but I think the damage was already done. The next thing was occasional stalling (TC lock-up) while waiting at traffic lights over the next few months. F-37 recall + new front pump appeared to fix the rest but not sure because I dumped it within two months.

My car started doing that about once a week. Based on past experience, it sounds and feels like you just hit an animal. Loud thud and jolt. I never got a look at the RPMs to see if the engine surged.

It was the last straw, I sold the Jeep. Sorry I can't offer any clues as to what the problem is.

Well I recieved My CRD back from the dealer and they were unable to duplicate or did not want to duplicate the huge flare in engine speed with the subsequent re-engaugment of the tranny causing the huge shudder in the vehicle.
They said all checks looked ok with no codes thrown, but then they contradicted them selves by saying they did find a fast shift code possibly caused by manualy speed shifting the vehicle to fast, I said well i don't speed shift it and that would be your clue to some thing qustionable don't Ya think? Blank stare from service writer sorry we did'nt find your problem.
They will not do any thing to investigate a possible problem any futher than to drive the car around and if the problem occures they may acknowledge or may not.
At least its documented and if it grenades I can say I told you there was problem. The first dealer I spoke with the prior week said I will get back to you when my A#1 craker jack tranny Guy gets back from his training seminar he's got 27 years experience.Well I got a call this last monday and the servive guy says we don't sell that model in California so you will have to take it to a dealer in a state that sold them.
Can you belive the that? If you were an out of state owner and you were bombing up the 405 Thru HB CA and your CRD took a dump the local chysler, dodge,Jeep dealer would say your out of luck pal. I know these guys sell a lot of diesel trucks and a boat load of sprinters. Just Crazy Really Bad PR. I will stop my ranting now and deal with it as it comes suncoast and transgo in my future. Later Flatfender
