Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It is a emissions control part. Because the engine isn't 100% efficient, some unburnt fuel goes through the exhaust. The EGR valve takes some exhaust gas and introduces that into the intake, thus recirculating the exhaust gas. Part of the gas is then burned twice, decreasing the amount of unburnt fuel leaving the jeep. WHile it sounds like it could increase efficiency (decreasing unburnt fuel), in actuality, it decreases efficiency...because you're introducing hot, dirty air into the induction charge of the engine. Also, you're introducing all of the crap in the exhaust back into the engine, thus contaminating the oil faster. |
