Would like to know how many have had a pump failure. Also would like to know your fuel setup. Stock, cat filter, lift pump added, whatever. Thanks.

Did you try purging the air out of the system? it took me a few purges to get it all out.

so I don't think it's real common - but doesn't sound like Chrysler wants to deal with it as warranty

It took about 75,000 miles for the 98 thru 02 cummins injector pumps to start failing from low fuel pressure

Mine failed at about 10,000 miles. Complained about poor mileage, bucking, excess smoke at 1000 miles, 3000 miles and 7000 miles. Dealer said no codes-no fix. Discovered air in the system around the 6000 mile mark. Mileage/smoke never got better but bucking stopped when the air was bled off daily. A tank of cruddy fuel at 10,000 miles brought the system to it's knees.

I think the long term air sucking trashed the pump. Dealer says it was the bad fuel but replaced everything under warranty. It took 3 months to get all of the parts. Mileage went up to 26-28 after the new pump. Still had to bleed air out every day. Every part from the tank pick-up to the injectors was replaced. Air problem never resolved.

All stock setup.

I had to pay for the tank to be drained and fuel system cleaning, $600 worth. Shell Oil denied my claim. I, nor the dealer, kept a fuel sample large enough to be tested. No fuel sample, no proof. Shell said their fuel was perfect in every way. I'll never buy a Shell product again. They can choke on their record profits. I think you need at least a qt of fuel in a clean container for a full test. Remember that if you need to a sample in the future.

You can read about my story if you want....replaced mine at 39000 km after CAT2 micron mod. Weak pump, low micron filter, bad karma, Et Voila! $6000 in repairs. My Caliberty now gets awesome economy and has power to spare. Only good thing is that I have the failed pump and will have it rebuilt (when the tools and parts are available) for the next round.
