Get call from the old man whilest in target.

Engine temps coming up to 3/4 of guage, cooled down back down but temp rises easily, running a little hot.

Engine surges, described as if you were getting on and off the gas.

General lack of power.

He plugged back in MAF connector, for now check engine light is still on.

I told him to purge air from filter head, check boost hoses, and pull OBDII codes.

Code reader isnt pulling codes for him, Ive searched but I cannot find the odometer code trick procedure(never paid much attention to it since the code reader always worked before).
Could someone please detail the trick again for me?

He said the boost hoses seem fine and all seem connected, any other ideas for him to check?

EDIT: New phone call, blowing the black plague smoke bigtime, fuel is being consumed rapidly.

Here are twotopics on pulling the codes the second is CRD specific.

Wish I had other answers for you.

I wonder if it could be starved for air and pulling it through the CCV along with oil? Does it have the CCV vented or going through the intercooler?

I agree, one of my first thoughts was boost leak, though without doing a pressure test it seems like everything is kosher, unfortunatly he doesnt have the same equipment I do to pressure test the hoses and intercooler.

Is it raining there? Could be a soggy air filter restricting air intake if so :D

I would check the air filter first. Are you saying that it didn't throw a CEL or that it did but you can not pull the code?

If you want to test your system for boost leaks, I'd recommend this: http://www.vfaq.com/mods/ICtester.html
I built one of these in the past and it works great. Very cheap and easy to do. You can attach it to the upper intercooler inlet (passenger side) and pressurize the system with a bicycle pump or whatever... then listen for leaks.

MAF was unplugged so a CEL would not have shown up as a new "symptom," additionally for some reason the code reader wasn't pulling any codes(not sure this model actually works with the Jeep, I know my other one does).

So right now we have no idea if its throwing any, or what those codes might be.

Since yors was wrecked and not under warranty you might be behind on flashes. There was a flash prior to F31 that scrambled the OBDII code reader capabilities and the F31 was implemented to change that. Third party readers had a problem reading the codes and the FEDS made D/C fix it.

The only recall out currently on it is the F37, it has already had one recall performed with the PCM update sticker, I assume either the F31 or the one prior to it.

I know my $40 harbor Frieght code reader worked with it when the engine was running, he has since bought a new code reader and it appears not to be compatible with the CRD(though for the life of me I can't figure why he wouldnt test it first? I guess things like that happen though)

The F37 was issued about 2 weeks before this thing was rolled.

Lots of black smoke sounds like a lack of air to the engine. There is a air flow valve that closes when you shut off the engine and about 5 seconds later pops back open. Sometimes it gets stuck half way shut. Open the hood, start the engine and if you still have a problem shut it off then run around to the front and listen for the click. A clean valve will click back open.

Or you can test the intercooler for leaks by taking your CRD to a diesel shop (large truck shop or major diesel shop). They can check the intercooler for a leak the right way. They will cap it, put 35psi to it and if if loses more than 5 psi in 15 seconds, the IC needs replaced. Better than trying to listen for a leak and will give you a more accurate analysis of the IC. Shouldn't be much of a cost to have them do it.

Hoses are another thing....

Mine appeared to be overheating since I bought it new 2 years ago, so I had the Gauge TSB flash done six months ago for $16 by the dealer and it went away. It is the temp gauge that is not functioning properly but the guage flash fixed it. It is a common issue with the CRD's and something to look into.
