Cheers, I'm from Portugal and own a '02 2.5L CRD since 2003. I've been following the discussions on the forum for quite some time and have been asking myself if there's any striking difference between the two engines when it comes to how it deals with emissions recirculation. I am aware the 2.8L has a cooler around the EGR valve that the 2.5L lacks. Could that be differentiating factor? Am I missing something obvious? As of now, it has 106000km (~66000 miles) and no EGR failure whatsoever (All maintenance has been done by me or at a local mechanic, so no TSBs, recalls or whatsoever). Only problem I've had was with a hose failing on me (from air intake to turbo I think). Oh.. and all the oily gook in the CAC hoses (both intake and output). I'll also probably have more problems with other hoses in the future, since with the oil buildup and rubbing from engine jitter several of them are becoming dented. Regards, Tiago |

Better, cleaner, higher cetane numbers on Euro fuel is a big factor. Also our US Emmissions probably require heavier use of EGR to control NOx. Since we have gone to ULSD in the US it seems like EGR failures are fewer and farther between. |

I suspect there's a lot of difference - I don't have any ideas as to what. Dutchy in Scotland has a 2.5 and he commented "We had a look at the quality of the oil and even after 6400 Miles it still looked and felt fresh" on the 2.8's - due to the EGR the oil is nasty black almost instantly. So either they don't recirculate as much exhaust or the fuel burns cleaner - something. |
