I hadn't heard this one before - so FYI

my CRD has 40,000 miles - and has never used any oil - then about 2 weeks ago - it started dripping - nice black spots - slowly at first and then more - I ended up using 2 quarts in about 500 miles - so I took it to the dealer.

Their conclusion - and it seems to be correct so far - is that the Mopar oil filter started seperating at the crimp on the edge of the can - i.e. the oil filter started coming apart. (3600 miles on the filter)

So cleaned up - new oil, new filter 3 entire miles so far and no drips.

in many years of driving - I've never had an oil filter come apart before.

It is however 1 point - it would be interesting if anyone else has had problems.

I'm at about 32k right now and no leaks myself .. all Mopar filters ( got a case of em on the cheap) ... the crimp leak sounds plausable though ...

I've had that happen on my previous car about 7 years ago. Used the el-cheapo store brand from Autozone (can't remember the name), same thing happened - started leaking at the crimp on the base, only took 50 miles to dump most of my oil out. Thankfully that car had an oil pressure gauge, and I noticed the oil pressure dipping way down when I went around a curve, was able to stop and refill it to get home before any damage was done.

I saw a Fram leak that way once and also a k-mart filter, no idea who made that one (about 20 years ago) but the insides were also coming apart.

Possibly the joys of the "Made in China" brand?

A heap of Chinese toys were recalled wernt they?

My 1st oil filter on my CRD was doing that from the factory (although not nearly that bad) - I think I replaced the oil filter at about 600 miles or so. I've noticed that several of the oil filters that I have bought have looked like the cap wasn't crimped on the body very well .... maybe they are getting beat up during shipping from Italy!!!!!

I had one blow the gasket in the middle of last winter. I just tightened it back down hard. There is a thread right now on bobstheoilguy on a purolator premium that actually separated into two pieces while the guy was driving. Great pictures. Never seen an oil filter do that. Every manufacturer makes a dud once in a while.
