| Post subject: | Plugged Catalytic converters? |
Did you notice the post by tigafila stating that his Catalytic converter was found clogged? The soot generated by the EGR is one of the downsides of using EGR for emissions control, hence the particulate filters used on some EGRed engines. Is this failure mode starting to creep up on us? Is my crappy mileage (18 city, 22 hwy) and the relatively small improvement of the ORM attributable to a clogged Cat Converter? The folks that have used ORM for a long time may be spared this plugging? How do ya test the back pressure of the CC? Anyone else have high miles (30K+) , bad mileage, and not use the ORM ? Bill |

Bill even at 32k when we made the first drive in ours we were getting about 24mpg. the ORM had not been done previously on it. |

Yeah, how do you check a Cat Con.? By removing it? And maybe never putting it back on? |

By removing it? And maybe never putting it back on? I used to check mine by removing it too. Its easy to make sure it isnt plugged....you just have to take a metal rod and beat on it till it goes all they way out the other side. Shake out the loose pieces and I guarantee you it will never be plugged again.

When I was a tech I rodded out many a converter on gassers. Sometimes you really have to work at it to get all the pieces out. It is supposed to look like a honeycomb and you should be able to look all the way through it if you shine light in the other end. I have been so busy and haven't been able to check it myself or that's probably what would have happened to this one. It's tough when it plugs completely on the road. |

I know if they are plugged up they will get really really hot! Maybe we could come up with a "normal" temp under a given set of conditions...... We had an old LTD Police interceptor that the CAT on it would get so hot you could see it glow at night time  That one got the rod.
