Hello, I have noticed that when I really step down on the accelerator I see some black smoke coming from the exhaust. Is this a normal occurrence with diesels? If not what could be a possible issue? CRD just flipped 20k miles. I haven't checked or cleaned the MAP sensor yet, could this help that issue?

Thanks
Larry

If you perform the "ORM" on your vehicle it will help lessen the smoke. I wish mine smoked  heh.. For info on the ORM go here: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... hp?t=22631

It is very normal with diesels in general....but the CRD shouldnt be spewing out a whole lot of black smoke every time you get on it. After you clear things out once it should run pretty clean on subsequent WOT passes.

I would say a gunked up MAP sensor could cause more smoke....as well as crappy fuel, really dirty airfilter, and a few other thing that would be bigger problems.

How much smoke is there?
Does it do it every time?

Its not often you get to quote yourself

The one thing I wonder about the ORM though, is if you do that and it sets off the CEL, does the CEL ever turn off? If not, how do you know when something else that would cause it to illuminate is happening?

That is funny, my friend calls it the bread truck.

I am certain people think it is a POS when I pass them and smoke is rolling out

I have a scangauge II OBDII reader. I use it to clear the CEL after I start up. That way I know when another condition lights the CEL. There are cheaper OBDII devices around, check out Harbor Freight or Northern Tool. PEP boys seem to have one on sale all the time. Never tried them myself.

You can also buy and build the ORM circuit that Turbo Tim designed. It keeps the CEL light off while giving you the advantages of the ORM.

It is almost as cool as those little buttons in the batmobile. I call it my "Smokescreen" and use it quite effectively when someone wants to ride my bumper.

What your most likley seeing is a accumulation of soot that has built up inside the exhaust system from "normal" driving getting blasted out under full throttle operation

Thanks. Glad to hear it is a common occurrence. And yes when it happens I do notice cars behind me back off pretty quickly.

John when I pull up to my home in the CRD, the dog goes crazy because he knows it's me from the CRD noise. When I pull up in my gas car, he doesn't move because he can't tell who it is (or hear it, probably).

Also - now that I've had the CRD for a while, my friends have decided that it sounds just as much like a UPS truck as it does a garbage truck.

Best of all though - if you have teen-age drivers in the house and let them use the CRD on weekend nights, they will never be "sneaking" in past curfiew unnoticed

Is he selling this through a web-site or something?

does it disable the CEL for ALL conditions or just for the condition that the ORM causes it to illuminate?

I am not familiar at all with Turbo Tim's circuit. Thanks.

That would explain the puffs and inconsitent smoke I saw when I was driving the old CJ and told my brother "give her h*ll and pass me, I want to hear what it sounds like".....

One day my wife and kids were in my CRD and some kids were tail gating me bad. My son Joe said Dad they are right on our bumper. I said no problem, I just smokem out and nailed it. My kids got the biggest laugh out of that. My CRD smokes too, but only when I tromp on it. I love it.

I love it! I wish the CRD smoked like some of the Ford Power Strokes / Cummins diesels. Those guys can put up a true smoke screen.
