Hello,

I'm currently seeking advise so that I can make a Jeep Liberty diesel purchase. I have vast experience with cummins mid-range, and other diesel engines. I own a 2004 Dodge cummins 4x4, and re-powered my 74 Dodge W200 with a 3.9 Cummins Turbo Diesel. Unfortunately my knowledge is limited with the CRD. I'm looking for something to pull my small motorcycle trailer when I go to pick up bikes. I'm also looking for mileage. This is the reason for the CRD diesel. Please give any advise, and suggestions, so that I can make this buying experience pleasurable. I also like the jeep, because I can put the two young boys in back and run around town. Thanks in advance for any replies and assistance.

What questions do you have. I mostly drive freeway at about 80 mph and average 25 mpg it is completely stock. I just bought mine in july absolutely love it. fully loaded with 37000 mi paid 19,500 I have a small issue with the tranny light Im thinking it is part of the f-37 recall.

Just read up as much as you can here and decide for yourself....but it sounds like you have plenty of diesel experience...I bet you would be one that really enjoys the KJ CRD.

It is a great little tow rig...you would have no problem pulling your bikes around.

EXACTLY :!: My average at 10k miles is now above 20 for mostly all in town short trip driving. There seems to be a wide rang of how CRD's preform both in power and fuel mileage. Some actually get 30+ mpg charging down the interstate  Mine is double what I got on my Cherokees so I'm happy.
Welcome to the forum

Thanks guys....

The local dealer has one, but wants a LOT of $$$$$$. It has 18k, is a limited loaded, but the want 24k. I think this is way too high. I would like to spend around 18,500. I didn't know if there was specific problems to look for or not. Yes, I've been reading the forum all the way through. Looks like a torque convertor issue. Why don't they offer these with the six speed like the European version?????? Anyway, thanks to all replys. I will do more looking and reading. Hopefully I will find a deal!!!! Thanks

Pete

Pete.
Emissions is why we can't have the 6 speed standard. Constant on and off throttle will not give the ECM enough time to react and change the EGR settings for the condition. With a automatic the throttle is mostly in one position, we don't let up when the tranny shifts. Limited's varied lots in equiptment and prices when new. Mine is a "low end limited" with only parcel package tray and Sirius radio options. It stickered for $28k+ and the dealer knocked off $5k making it $23,854 new plus t&t so hang in there and keep looking. They are a one of a kind vehicle for the US so they should hold their value into the future at least till the asians start releasing their own models. Several new members here who have bought used ones are having "issues" that may have been why they were traded in so have the dealer, if it's a jeep dealer, pull up the service record on it to learn a little about it's past.

The one you are looking at was likely listed for around 30K and sold for around 25K. 6 months or a year ago you likely could have bought it for around 18K but I think the word is getting out now and depending on the location prices are holding close to original sale price. Good luck. When you find one I am sure you will love it.

Might need to look for a Sport. As the biodiesel craze builds and demand for small diesels has increased, the prices of VW TDI's and old Mercedes shot through the roof. I think the CRD's are now getting some of that.

Out here in Portland, I see several private parties offering 05-06 CRD Limited's on Craigslist for $22-24,000.

Thanks for all the replys. I'm shopping. I don't have a lot to spend, and won't give a fortune for a used vehicle. I'm looking to spend around 18,500. Do both the 2005 and 2006 run the 7/70 powertrain? The one I drove has a pronounced clunk when you start, and shut it off. The dealer service advisor thought the exhaust was out of the rubber bushing, and was hitting when the engine shook from initial start up and shut down? Any comments? No, I haven't been able to look under it for myself yet. I had my 2 year old and 5 year old with me, so doing an inspection was not an option at that time. Yes, I will look everything over good underneath when I don't have the kids.

Only the 05 had the 7/70 power train warranty and there are expensive things on but not in the engine  Also it needs to transfered to you and there's a cost for that. This is the only vehicle I've ever gotten a extended warranty on. Several here have the Chrysler maxicare warranty that can be gotten with different time and mileage amounts and covers the most items. For the clunk, some had broken motor mount bolts cause it.

Joe,

I specifically told them to look for a loose nut, or broken bolt on the motor mount from my reading here. The "service advisor" told me everything was solid underneath except for the exhaust. Now, with that said, I don't trust anything until I get under the frame and look things over myself. Thanks for the tip.

Can anyone help me out with what the CRD's are bringing around them. I'm watching E-bay, but its always nice to hear from individuals. The prices really seem to vary. Any help appreciated. If anyone has purchased recently, could you please post your options, and what you paid for the vehicle. Thanks for everyones time.

Pete

I don't see them from private parties but I have seen three at dealers, two locally and one in Oregon. One locally was gone right away and I don't know the asking price but they currently have an '05 Sport with 49K miles for $21,900. A friend in Salem, Or picked up an '06 Limited a couple of months ago with low miles (18K I think) and the asking price was $27,900. I don't know what he paid though.

If you watch Craig's lists in various cities you might find one closer to your price range direct from an owner.

Dave,

Thanks,

I won't give near that.... They are used, and from what I read most dealers knocked off 5-6k when new. Yes, private sale might be the best. The local dealer has a limited with 18k, fairly loaded. He wants 24k. I won't give that. I will probably offer 18,800 Monday. They may laugh, but its been on the lot for almost three months and no one has purchased it yet. If they really want to unload it, they will agree. If not, I will move on. Thanks for the advise. I'm sure I will find the proper price, and vehicle in time.

Pete

Patience is a good thing!

There was a new Limited a few months ago in Everett, WA, dealer demo I think. They were asking new price but then it would have had new incentives, terms and warranty too. They may still have it. The one that your dealer has would not stay on most lots out here for more than a week or two.

Dave,

Agreed---I think patience is the key to buying this vehicle. When the time is right, it will be right. I'm in no hurry.

yeah ever since fuel prices went up and they announced there would be no more diesels the resale has been high..

my parents bought a 06 sport out the door for like 22000 in september and there were crds all over they couldn't get rid of. i started looking in december and ended up getting a used one, and paid 23500 for my limited with 12500 on the odo.
i would be happy about the resaile being high but have no plans to get rid of mine

The lack of a US replacement for the CRD has turned me into a very cautious driver. I drive very defensively as I am pretty sure it is not replaceable if some idiot blows a red light or does something else stupid that ends up getting me totalled. :?
