My CRD needs new shoes, what is the largest size that I can have without lift? Does anyone know of a place around central New Jersey that will put a lift on it?

Tire that will fit without a lift and give you no problems...235/75/16s. I know this from personal experience. I also know that these same sized tires will look good with a 2"-2.25" OME lift.

This will give you a 29.84" tire or so and no rubbing issues on stock rims.

Two of the nicest tires I have found in this harder to find size are the Hercules Terra Trac ATs and Toyo Open Country ATs.

I've got 235/75/16 Firestone Destination AT's on mine w/ no lift. Just a little bit of rubbing on the plastic in the front wheel wells at full lock.

Hi! I put 245-70-16 Bridgestone REVO's on mine. No clearance problems at all. Acording to "Tire Rack" they are 0.7% Different from stock.

I am running 245/70 16's without trouble. I don't off road much so I haven't stuffed them but no problems lock to lock.

CowCatcher - I'm thinking of doing the exact same thing for tires. I assume you have the A/T's? How many miles and how do you like them?

I'm just waiting for Les Schwab to have thier tire sale!

I couldn't wait for the sale, darn. I don't have the spare done yet though. Yes, I went with the Toyo AT's (Open Country) simply because of my past experience with Les Schwab and the fact that if one of them fails I can get it replaced and be back on the road in 10 minutes nearly anyplace in the Northwest. I have about 3K miles on them is all and it was after the 6th flat and one blow out on the OEM's that Badyear guaranties against damage from frozen chewing gum on the center line of Interstate 90 between mile post 103 and 107 on February 29th.

Kiss your great mileage goodbye when you put real tires on the CRD! It has been about a 2 MPG hit for me.

CowCatcher...did you adjust your miles traveled a bit for the taller tires? I put the 235/75/16s which are a bit taller than yours and keep them at 40psi...haven't lost mpg in any measureable amount. From 29.2" to 29.84". The total error from the odometer reading and actual miles traveled is 6% so for every 100 odometer miles I have really gone 106 miles (adjusted for inherent odometer error and taller tires).

That was the strange part Walt. I expected my OEM Odometer error to increase from 6% to perhaps 7% but it went to 5%. I am running a little lower tire pressure and I put the roof rack on about 2 weeks after the tires so that is also a contributing factor. I have finally added the tranny and transfer skid too but that didn't seem to impact it. I am going to pull the roof rack tonight and air the tires up about 4 PSI before a 300 mile trip on Friday and Saturday to see if that makes a difference. It may be the different pressure with the OEMs actually made them larger than the 245/70's.

I just put on a set or Dean Trail Cats 255x70x16's this AM and the difference in handling is HUGE. I may have lost a little power off of the line, but it feels really awesome to have a good grip on the road and the height is slightly higher. My gut instinct is that I will probably lose a little bit of mileage, but I'm willing to give that up for the stability. Especially with winter coming.

The calculators say that it will put my speedo off by 2.6%, but that should just make my warranty last longer, right? 8)

A stock speedo is optisistic...meaning if it reads 86 you are probably going 64.5 or so. The odometer is pessimistic...meaning if you travel 100 on the odometer you have traveled about 104 with stock tires. Taller tires, like my 235/75/14s have put the speedo at 68 and real speed at 66.5 or so. My odometer reads 100 and I have traveled 106.

So basically after you add a bit taller tire, you speedo is closer to true speed AND you have extended your warranty a bit. I have a feeling that a bit bigger tire actually helps highway mileage...like regearing for mileage. Once you go to a "E" rated tall tier you mileage will suffer from the extra weight and height.
