In Europe, our 2.8 liter diesel is offered in several Jeep models with the NSG370 6 speed manual that is/was offered with gasoline engines in Liberties in the USA.

Has anyone investigated swappng a NSG370 into a CRD?

Well heres a good question, does the NSG370 for the CRD and the NSG370 for the 3.7 have the same bell housing bolt pattern? sourcing the parts to swap might not be that hard, but if the bell housing need machining or adapters that puts it into a whole new level for a swap.

If the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same then it might be a relatively easy swap just requiring a fat checkbook.

Bell housing is the same.

The other items you would need:
*Dual mass flywheel w/ clutch/pressure plate: not available in US
*ECU with man. trans calibration: not available in US
*T-case? Not sure on that one.
*Trans is different length, need new driveshafts
*Man. trans programming for CCN (cluster), IPM/TIPM (power module under the hood): diesel not available in US.

If you only had endless dollars to spend...

ordering a clutch and flywheel out of europe is only an issue of $$$

the T-case should boltup or the 6speed case could be used.

different length DS, ya, I would expect that, though there are lots of custom DS makers out there.

now you brought up PCM and cluster programming, what would be different in them that needs to be changed?

I was going to post a question to see if anyone had tried this yet. The programming you'd need for the new transmission would be so the gauges (speedo and odo) would record in miles. Otherwise you'd be racking up "miles" faster than ever because the trans speedo sensor would be recording kilometers. It seems feasible, someone should do it so I can duplicate in a couple of years. HA!

Therein lies the rub. Everyone wants to be the 2nd person to do this after someone else is the guinea pig.

I'd gladly pay $3-4k to swap in a manual tranny, I'd also love to have an exhaust break for mountain driving.

Here in Italy all the parts you could want and would cost you about $10,000 plus shipping($2-3000)

Another option might be the new 68RE 6 speed autos in the Dodge Cummins trucks. Has this nice little button on the stalk that lets you manually shift gears.

From what I've seen so far, the 68RE is nothing more than a reworked version of the 545RFE - the new design oil pump for the 545 is virtually identical to the one for the 68RE.

If there's that much commonality between the two, might not even require a tranny swap - pull out the 545 and rebuild it with 68RE internals, swap out the TCM for one with 68RE programming, and find some place in the cab to mount a manual shift button.

If nothing else, a little research might reveal whether or not we could wire in the manual shift feature on our present trannys. That alone would have me tickled pink.

So far the 68RE is only used behind the Cummins trucks and they have a different bellhousing size due to larger diameter torque converter. Won't bolt up to the KJ engine so it'd be kind of a hard swap. Also lack of programming in the ECU to transmit/receive proper CAN signals would leave one or the other always in limp home which wouldn't work out so well. Also the internals are different and the case is physically larger (from the ones I've seen) so I'm not sure you could put 68RFE internals into the 545RFE case.
