So I got me CRD back today. All told it was out of service for almost a week (Replaced FCV, picked up and another CEL on trip home, taken back, replaced EGR).

Now I've got a new fresh EGR (3 replaced so far), and a new EGR/FCV (2 replaced so far). Total miles on the vehicle - ~ 42k.

So I went back and talked to the diesel tech again. I asked him about the gears getting stuck on the FCV as indicated on the invoice. Specifically, I wanted to know if it was indeed the gear getting stuck or the motor burning up. He said he's never opened one up and didn't know. He doesn't know why the EGR goes TU either.

I also asked the tech about the position of the butterfly in the FCV. In what position was it when he found it stuck? He said it was fully opened. I asked the same question about the EGR. He said it was fully closed. I was surprised to hear that since I was experiencing significant turbo lag and degraded fuel mileage.

I cleared the EVIC average MPG on the start of my way home. By the time I got home it was reading over 31 MPG. I was traveling around Baltimore on I-695, doing about 65 mph (avg). That's the best MPG reading I've gotten in a long time. Before I took it in, the best I was getting on the EVIC was around 25 MPG.

If the EGR was fully closed and the FCV was fully opened when they failed, you wouldn't think that I would see an improvement in fuel economy, now that they are working. Let's hope not anyway, because I'm contemplating installing the SEGR, which sets this condition while going down the road. It makes me wonder in what position the EGR and FCV were actually finding themselves in when the thing was actually running.

I'll have a practically new EGR and FCV when the SEGR goes in. I'll see what happens. I'm hoping the newly improved MPG will remain, or even improve. I'm also hoping on improved performance - especially in the turbo lag area.

Any thoughts?

One other thing to note:

The diesel tech also said that the FCV and EGR go through some kind of checks when you start it up and when you shut it down. Basically he said that during this time, the EGR will briefly open and close several times. The benefit is that it will clean all the soot off of itself (so the theory goes). He said the FCV will do much the same thing.

I'd SEEGR it in a noo york minit - no use letting that stuff gum up again.

That tech was prolly sent to a class where they tole him Diesel is the name of the guy that developed heat-ignition engines, and that it should always be capitalized out of respect.

He was tole never to use Diesel fuel in the barbque pit, even tho it smells like starter fluid, because there was somthing bad in it

He was tole never to use Diesel fuel in the mosquito fogger, also because of something bad in it

He was then tole he could always tell one because Diesels sound different

Then he was given the keys to your Jeep and an 'attaboy!' and dispatched posthaste out of the manager's office to fix it.............

I think the official Tech training was a 1 hour video tape.

t2,

just curious, since I am somewhat in the surrounding area, what dealer do you take your jeep for service?

That's sad - and I'll bet they expect the techs to diagnose and repair one after that, right?

Prolly wouldn't have any better luck at the Dodge dealer, either - the tech would whup the scantool out, discover way low CP3 housing pressure, crank the regulator all the way up, and when you get the Jeep back, the stock starter motor wouldn't even be able to crank it over

We got any real employed Jeep techs aboard? Maybe a free subscription to each Jeep dealership would help turn things around - whaddaya thimk?

This was Heritage in Owens Mills. I'm not slamming the tech. He was a very pleasent fellow to speak with (he liked to talk about the CRD and his work in general) and tried to be very helpful. He also listened intently to what I had to say, especially to the things that I've repeated from the forums. He didn't discount you folks, or myself out of hand, like others have. He was respectful of my opinions and comments. He seems like a guy who is interested in learning all that he can, and doesn't just discount things out of hand. I may use his services again and see how it goes.

I just started going to Heritage, and so far I would give them good marks. I was going to Ourisman, which is where I bought the vehicle. I don't care for Ourisman's service writers. In fact I got into it with one of them and I've never been back. The service writter that I got into it with tried to claim that either the local independent mechanic I was taking the CRD to, or I myself had cause the issue with the fuel filter head leaking fuel (and almost causing the fire). Based on his assumptions he was going to see to it that it wasn't covered under warranty. I told this guy that he was an booty and told him to stick his assumptions. I then called Heritage and they told me that they would take care of it (under warranty), no questions asked. Ourisman also makes it difficult to talk to the diesel tech that's working on your vehicle. Heritage makes them readilly available ("Sure go on back, he's right around the corner at the second bay on the right.")

I wasn't slamming the tech, either - just Jeep's laggardness in getting up to speed in the Diesel segment, and throwing those guys to the wolves after an indoctrination movie

One other tid-bit of information the tech gave:

The part number for the FCV does not indicate that it has ever been superseded.

We can add that number to the knowledge base if you'll post it, and any other parts they used.

Was intended to be :D - a humorous anecdote about the really sad lack of training those gasser (patooie!) techs are given, while expected to diagnose and troubleshoot any Diesel system, much less this immensly complicated CRD with even more intensly complicated light-duty emissions scheme

It's the same at GM with the obsoleted 6.5 - those guys dont even want to see one in the service bay - they do the short-straw thing to select the guy in the barrel - has resulted in tremendous swelling of the ranks of the 6.5 forums, by work of mouth and word of keyboard
