does anyone else have a ticking sound coming from there bell-housing? I have had the f-37 recall done, and had a convertor replaced since, any ideas? |

I just noticed a ticking sound coming from the passenger side on "The Princess's" Yeep (Scandinavian for Jeep). Can hear it at idle listening from the ground behind the front wheel. I'm not sure just where its source is. Could be exhaust, as I have had to snug things up on the connection to the turbo before. Lot of flex and movement on the tubes. We've had no F37 and won't either. But my first impressions for your tick would be the exhaust connections especially at the turbo. |

Drop the inspection cover, check that all four convertor bolts are tight - also look at the bellhousing-to-engine bolts - and the exhaust stuff, as mentioned - any loose fasteners |

I metioned my ticking to the dealer. They heard it but couldn't find a cause. They said they "noted" the problem and would look for service bulletins on it. Translated it means we don't want to mess with it. I'll keep watching this thread for the real answer. |

there is a tsb for this, and the recall f37 eludes to this symptom. I do not have an exhaust leak, its a metallic ticking. Very prominent at idle when vehicle is fully warmed up. I really notice it when its running next to a building. |

I've noticed a ticking on the wife's Libby. Only at cold idle. Goes away when warm. Thought it could be an injector but it doesn't act like it and the engine runs fine. What TSB?? BTW we had F 37 done. |

I don't ever recall a tsb on unusual ticking. Only a tsb on tc noises in prelude to the f37 castration.... |

mine is a ticker too...be interesting if some one ever discovers a problem assocaited with it, or if is just a bit more personality of the CRD. |

I have the ticking randomly too...notice it when rolling to a stop. Can't reproduce it on any given day. I think I've narrowed the sound down to driver side beneath me or near the rear wheel...but it happens only ocassionally. I mentioned it to my service place and they told me to keep an ear on it and once it becomes prominent or if I can get it to happen all the time, then bring it in. I've had the recall done and its definitely not coming from the CVs or the LBJ. Very strange metalic ticking is the perfect description...have looked for rocks in the treads, had front brakes done recently and had them look over everything...so far no culprit...too weird, but not happening enough to really concern me yet...very minimal and stops immediately after a few ticks when it DOES happen. |

My ticking is cold start warming up, goes away when engine is hot. I was told it was the engine oil pump |

Mine is ticking also - just as described - really noticeable if pulling through a ATM. No F37 for me - so I guess it just keep ticking When it stops...then I'll worry ![]() |

Mine does it when cold and goes away when warmed up also.....it quit after F37 when I got a new TC. I dont know how much of F37 they did as they were having problems flashing the computer. Now it's doing it agian. My guess would be the TC or something of the like....has anyone with a suncoast noticed this also? |

I have a sympathetic rattle that rattles with the engine. It does not do it all the time – sometimes when it is cold and sometime when it has been driven quite a long time. Sometimes when it is not doing it I will hear a sort of doink when I hit a certain type of bump and it will then start doing it. If I remove the engine cover so I can get a grip on the oil filler spout from either side and shake the engine back and forth I hear the doink. Sounds like it is right front. All mounts are seriously tightened. I have had people under the car while I shake the engine and they cannot find it. If I get under they cannot shake the engine hard enough to make it happen. I’m just gonna driv’er till she blows. |

It "could be" that at idle it is running on the lean side...especially if you are ORM...it should not be a problem if that is the cause. Now "Clacking", that would worry me ![]() |

Reviving this old thread. I see there are several like it. I googled around the other day (I guess I was lucky I looked elsewhere because lost was down), and some diesel experts said that all diesels have this Metallic tick to some extent, and minor variations in each engine make it more or less noticeable. I think they said it had something to do with crank journals and harmonics of a diesel engine.... ![]() Anyhow, the engine that I just reassembled has it much louder than my daily driver, so I was worried. Kind of sounds like it's a 22RE toyota engine with clacking rockers, but the rockers are in great shape. It increases steadily with RPM's and may make this one hard to sell to a someone that's not knowledgeable about diesels. The only other contributing factor I can think of is that I'm still tweaking the transmission fluid level, and it's either too high, or low. I'm having a really hard time getting a read on the dipstick (and I have great vision!)... It stalled in the driveway after going from drive to park, and it had been running for a few minutes, so I definitely don't have the fluid level correct. I wouldn't turn down any advice on that problem either ![]() |
