So I drive about 3/4 mile trip to my parents house, get out key in hand and notice my fan is still going. It went off after about 25 seconds. I guess I could see this as ok if it was hot and it had some sort of thermostat and relay that cuts it off when it cools down... but the only problem is this is the first time its happened in 23,000 miles and it was possibly the shortest trip I've ever made so I know the engine was not hot. I've had electrical problems on the thing with lights that the dealer just got straightened out last week. Hope this isn't related unless its supposed to do it. Anybody else have this happen?

Returned from Port St. Lucie, FL in middle of June and aux fan was running at the two reststops that we made, as I leave the engine running with AC on. Temp was in the 90's. Thats the only time the aux fan has run that I know of.

Ya, inconsistent fan operation. Mine was on quite a bit this summer, but sometimes on the hottest day after an hour of driving.... not on. Weird. Has bothered me for a while. ( I wonder where the thermostat is that controls it? or is it the ECM?)

I think the fan is AC and tranny related as much as engine cooling related. If you are not going very fast or the ac is having some kind of trouble moving enough air across the exchanger, it turns on the fan to move more air. That ac exchanger is also the tranny cooler. So even when the engine is not hot, the tranny can be (like coasting down hill or driving slow in start and stop conditions). This would cause the fan motor to come on at wierd times.

Should it be running even when the key is out? That seems strange to me, and makes me a bit leery of working around the fan.....

Sounds like your ignition though it was still on, you havnt installed a remote start or turbo timer have you?

Its not uncommon for the fan too continue running after key is taken out on many vehicles especially turbo'd ones. It's just cooling the system down to the preset temp of the thermostat and cool is good and hot is bad.

No i've not installed a remote start or anything like that. I know that some vehicles fans do run with the key off till its cool. Thats why I'm trying to see if any of you guys have had it happen with the key off. The only thing is it has never done this in over a year. I live in the mountains and I've towed some heavy stuff up some big ones. Taken a 3000 + lb trailer on several 250 mile + trips. The first time it does it is on a minute and a half drive on a flat road. Seems to me like it would have happened sometime before in the past 15 months. Its just strange.

hokie - we had 44 consecutive days of over 95 degree weather and 12 consecutive days of over 100 degree weather this past Summer here in the Southeast and I used the CRD with the a/c running on high - at highway speeds of 75 MPH and stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for 20 to 30 mins at a time. The fan has always shut down with the car and never ran without the key in the ON position.

The reason I would be surprised if our fans could continue to run without the key is because when you open the hood, there is no sticker that states that the fan can become operational while the engine is off. I am not totally sure, but I believe that warning is required on vehicles that have that ability.

Bring it in for service so you dont come out to a dead battery one morning.

Ive only heard mine run once as well, it to was on a "cooler" day. I was even thinging about wiring a timer swich on mine so i can leave it running for 2 min. after shutdown

But what is the purpose of the fan running if the water pump is not circulating water? Do we have an electric water pump too?

Never thought about it that much, but it could be that the heat in the water causes convection and may still circulate slighty without the pump,dunno for sure though.Bet someone out there will know for sure.

Yup, that's why they include the warning "Fan may run when vehicle is off." I actually saw a tech stick his hand into a running fan once (car was off) when he was trying to explain that a hole in the radiator was not his fault. Needless to say, my friend and I didn't trust him much. Was funny though.

I have seen the warnings that "fan may run anytime ignition is on" but not "Fan may run when vehicle is off." , and I have never had one run with ignition off but it is good to know!

Back in the 1980's we had a turbo charged Nissan 300ZX. The engine had a cool-down fan that ran for 10 minutes every time the key was turned off, as long as the engine temperature registered any warmth at all (even if we just drove a few blocks and shut-down). It had at least two large warning stickers under the hood about the the fan coming at any time - even with ignition off. In the 1990's, I've also seen them on several friends Audi's too.

I've yet to catch that fan running I'm going to try a bit harder to catch it but maybe less likely with snow on it's way? Hope it works, but then again I've never gotten it over the mid point on the temp gauge anyways.

My parents' Renault Laguna has the thermal fan running for a minute or so on hot days.

Never had my CRD do it though.
