EDIT : The status of this problem has changed and a new thread was created -- be sure go to the new thread after reading this one ...

Anyone else run into this issue. At my last oil change (I do them myself) the bolt almost fell out. It never went back in correctly after that.

I know how to change oil and I never tighten the bolt much.

Any ideas ??? Dealer wants an arm and leg for the repair ...

Others have had the same problem either on their own or with the dealer and the dealer solution is to replace the cast aluminum pan for about $800. Others have tapped it out and replaced it with something bigger or with a friction plug.

I have seen it happen often enough that I had my dealer install a Fumoto valve the last time I took it in. I would have done it myself but the last time they changed it under a free oil change purchase incentive and the plug was so tight that I could not remove it myself.

I am sure that others here will give you more specific instructions for a fix as it is a common problem.

Rethread it with a larger thread. Perhaps install a Helicoil as aluminum isn't made for repeated fastener torquing. That's probably your cheapest option.

Well since my original post things have changed some ....

Since my engine cradle was broken anyway, the labor charge to change the pan would be cheaper if I do it now.

The oil pan also was in stock near and they would be able to do it tomorrow for just under $500.

I went ahead and I am changing it ... ONLY because I plan on taking them to small claims court to get my $$$ back. Its too common of an issue to ignore.

ALSO, the service manager told me that they "redesigned" the part. That leads me to believe that redesign was a solution to the issue.

So I have a new post I'm creating asking for help from the forum members in getting the information I will need to take Jeep to court.

I will post a link to it here in a couple minutes ...

I would also consider a Fumoto or some other plug replacement that would eliminate removing the plug each oil change.
