Diesel is pushing up to $3.60 in my neck of the woods with RUG around $2.90. Until the snow flies I wish I had a small, high mileage commuter car.

The "Hypermilers" are getting ~60mpg in the Civic VXs... Right now Diesel is <10% higher than Rug in San Antonio ($2.69 vs $2.89)...but remember that Rug will eventually go up also. I have been using some hypermiler techniques lately and increased my city mileage 14%. I don't use all the techniques, but I do use the safe ones. No idling...timing lights...slow roll up and down...carrying speed thru corners if possible...coasting when possible (not in neutral...but the CRD will let the rpms drop to 750 after a short time)...removing extra weight (thinking about removing rear seats)...airing tires up (I am at 44psi)...ect... it really does work. |

Any car will do better than a Jeep. It doesn't have to be a Civic. Without even trying I get 28-29 with a V-6 A/T high mileage Cutlass. Course it probably weighs 1,000 pounds less than the Jeep and is aerodynamic and low to the ground. Must be something wrong with me because I LOVE driving the KJ more. |

I was lucky to find ULSD at 2.99/gal yesterday and filled up. Everywhere else it was around 3.15. I just keep telling myself that I'm still spending less on fuel than I ever did with the old F150. |

B20 was $3.11 a gallon here two weeks ago (my last fill-up). My wife just got rid of her Civic for a 2006 Jetta TDI. We drove it to the coast last weekend... 220 miles, mostly highway, used less than a quarter tank of diesel. Guessing somewhere around 45-50 mpg. |

i'm glad i don't commute by car.... although i think i'll be getting myself a really good rainsuit so i can ride the bike mostly, save the tractor for towing and highway trips |

I end up putting about the same mileage on the fleet of two-wheelers as I do on the four-wheeler (eight-wheeler w/ trailer?) on an annual basis. Of course, in one weekend pulling the trailer, I put three weeks worth of bike-commuting mileage on it. "Eh". As to the "really good rainsuit"... I find that I end up using my ~actual~ rainsuit two or three times a year. Other times the rain just isn't heavy enough to bother, or the roads are just wet. BTW, to keep this post "on topic"... I've got a 2002 Hyundai Accent w/ a 1.6l motor which only gets 1mpg better (city) than the CRD on my commute. A Prius would probably do better in the roll-six-feet-and-stop commute we have around here (w/o HOV). |

I don't think of the gas prices because either way I'd have a SUV, I think of the crappy mileage I'd get in a gas version and still think I'm ahead. |

Thats my way of thinking pretty much. My S-10 with a 4.3L did only 16-18mpg, and I'm killing that now in the Liberty. Even with the higher price of diesel I'm still ahead considerably. |

Between Good mpg, Full-Time 4wd, Diesel Grunt and the Perfect Size for me...I am getting all I bargained for and some. I have been a cyclist for many years and if it came to riding more for transportation...no problem. In San Antonio the weather cooperates almost everyday of the year. |

Most bikes these days aren't all that great. Lots and lots of power, but lucky to get 40 mpg. My old V45 Magna got about 35 mpg. A 250 cc Rebel or something will get 50+, but a 250 cc motorcycle just ain't no fun on the highway. Better than a Hyundai, but not as good as a diesel VW or a Prius. The Bluetec Jetta's are supposed to go on sale next spring. Introduction was set back by a fire at the factory that makes the engines. I don't believe the 70 mpg figure... Honda's new diesel accord is right at 50 mpg, I expect the Jetta to be in the same ballpark. Have to say, though it may still be small car, the Jetta kicks the crap out of the Prius in all catagories. |

My YZF600R got a steady 45 mpg after I regeared , piped and jetted it...wish I had it now. Just for the fun of it. Gotta think about additional costs of owning a second vehicle. Tags, Insurance, Maintenence, wear and tear items...ect. It really takes a lot of pluses to justify a second vehicle. |

I had a Ducati M900, wonderful fun, but only got 35 mpg best...maybe because it was so nice to pin it all the time. Loved the torque of the twins, must be why I like the diesel so much too. |

I averaged 72 mpg on a 99.5 jetta tdi on 2 full tanks. Everything was right, good fuel from Florida and Georgia, (Ohio has rot gut) cool temperture, no AC, humid evening and night, no traffic, cruise control at 70 mph and no stoping, wife was sleeping so I passed the rest stops

I've been driving the jetta a lot since the temps have come down from the high nineties 45mpg just back and fourth to work but no air or amenities to speak of. I have to make 500 gals of bio soon because i'm out and I had to buy dino-d last week which hurt me to my very soul.
