OK this morning I got in turned the key waited for the coils to turn off (about 2 seconds) fired up the CRD, purring nicely, I let it run for around 30 seconds backed out of the driveway put it in drive and it went to running on 1 or 2 cylinders then stalled, restarted and stalled 3 times before it finally started and ran right on the 4th try.

NO CEL’s no other problems, fuel filter was changed over 1200 miles ago. Called the dealer this morning as I expected, showing no CEL nothing they can do.

Any ideas ?

Moose, out of curiosity, what was the weather like (temp)? I had something similar happen last year with a very cold snap (run for a little while, presumably while there was still good fuel in the rail) and then died. Took a few cranks and shut-downs till things ran smoothly again. I thought it was my high-percentage of Bio at the time...

I'd jump on air in the filter assembly as my first guess.

Yup! Check your fuel heater connection on the filter head. Also check to see how tight the filter is for starters.

Yes I have noticed starts ups taking a bit more cranking. Along with a start and stall in the mornings.

I'm replacing the fuel filter tomorrow morning. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Wife and a couple of her friends took it on a trip last weekend put over 2000 miles on it in 4 days. Putting it up over 38k miles. Maybe they got some bad fuel someplace.

I asked her if the did anything but drive around. Got the evil look no answer.

If the dealer did the fuel filter change I would also be suspect of the "o" ring for the fuel filter. Again I would also check the fuel filter head heater connection for burnout and air leaks.

That might be the key. If it IS air in the filter, there have been lots of conversations thrown around that suggest that the cooldown period helps allow excess heat at the injectors and filter dissipate, and that not doing to could result in hot fuel at the head/filter (more likely to separate dissolved O2...). The wife may have driven it all over and never let it cool down when parking, just a thought. Honestly, though, a 11mm wrench and a good shop towell are all you need to verify if it needs bled or not. It's worth a try.

I changed the filter this morning. Seams to run smoother, probably just my imagination.

Started off this morning seeing if there was air in the system when I first opened the bleed off nothing but air came out not even a drop of fuel. Gave it a few pumps and got a little fuel after a lot of air.

Decided screw this and drove my Vintage Ford to NAPA and picked up the new filter. Told me it was $13.95 but acturally cost me $20.55 with tax. Still better than the $65 the dealer wants for the same part.

When I dropped the filter it wasn't even 1/2 full is that normal? I would have though it should have been full to the top to eliminate an air pocket.

OH well took longer to bleed it off than it took to swap out.

Bled it, drove it, bled it again, started it shut it off and bled it again, did that till I got absolutely no air.

Really feels smoother now.

In a couple of days check for air again. Did you check the heater plug like Cowcatches suggested?
