I was travelling this week and given a PT Cruiser as a rental car with about 9,000 on the odometer

What a POS!! Other than anaemic acceleration, poor handling, soft brakes and lousy (for a 4 cylinder) MPG it was fine. I am told that it is built on the old Neon platform-it shows.

Oh, and by the way for all you who complain about CRD tranny, not only did it have a shudder, but it really "clunked" between shifts.

Makes my CRD seem like a great ride

I drove a base Cobalt as a rental in Hawaii and I couldn't wait to drop it off. It barely had enough power to get up to highway speed let alone pass anyone.

did see an add for brand new pt cruisers for $9995 with air lol well i had to go check em out you know something i like it. Was looking at a black one striped out with air yes 5sp stick. It looked pretty gangster toss on some black rims. I tried to talk my sis into getting one instead of the expensive CRD. I had a 80;s bmw and the pt reminded me of that running through the gears cheap and new is cool.

Well, go figure - the PTC is the "basement" car now that the Neon is gone. You're talking a price on average $10K less than what the CRD cost. I've always liked the looks of it - first time I saw one years ago the first thought that went thru my mind was that Chrysler had done a modern version of a '40 Ford. Had an uncle that had several of those around when I was young, both of his boys had one. Kinda warmed my heart to see someone in effect bring these old cars back, including the old fashioned door handles. Had one with an auto as a rental 3 or 4 times from the dealer, and for what it is - basically a bargain basement retro MPV/station wagon - thought it did rather well. Before we got the problems with the CRD sorted out and it was still in doubt whether or not I was going to keep it, a PTC was on my short list of vehicles to trade for.

The torque of the CRD makes most other cars (and some Trucks) feel like driving junk. My wife drives a PT Cruiser, It was only half the price of My CRD so it should only be half as good......Right?

I traded in a PT Cruiser for my CRD. The PT was a dog of a car for sure. It acclerated like it was towing a 2000lb block of concrete, got a whopping 19mpg in the city and 26 on the highway and that's with a 5-speed (my CRD gets 20 in the city and 28 on the highway). Other than the amount of room it had for a small car, I liked nothing about it except the price. I bought it because it was in good shape, and cheap.

Makes my CRD seem like a great ride If you think a PT is bad drive a Chevy Cobalt! My daughter had a 2003 Dream edition with the 220hp Turbo. That car was fast. But fuel economy was not that great. She had a 2000 Neon before that and it did handle very well and not too bad on gas. Never understood what people have against Neons. They were good value for the money. If I could get a really good deal on an SRT 4 I wouldn't mind driving it.

I have driven SRT4s, they are a lot of fun. A few years ago they were the fastest car under $20k stock. I drove a base Cobalt as a rental in Hawaii and I couldn't wait to drop it off. It barely had enough power to get up to highway speed let alone pass anyone.

When PT Cruisers first came out people were stupid enough to pay over MSRP for them. Talk about serious depreciation. I had a '69 Firebird at the time and on a Pontiac forum I belonged to people in Detroit were talking about the dream cruise they have up there and people that had just bought PT Cruisers were showing up in large numbers for the cruise. Imagine a guy in his GTO during an event like that lined up next to some guy that just paid too much for a PT Cruiser. I have had one for a rental on numerous occasions and they are ok transportation, but nothing to get excited about.

See there is your problem. When in Hawaii, you need to rent a convertible and wear matching hawaiian shirts with the rest of your family Can't count the number of times I saw that when I lived in Hawaii. Now on the topic of rentals, the last time I was in Hawaii I had a Caliber and it was a total dog. Almost had the same gas mileage as my KJ did in HI. I did have a Pontiac G6 with a v6 in it when I was in New Orleans, that car was much more fun.

I like the Caliber. Bought one for my wife. Yeah, its not the fastest thing off the line but if you put your foot in it it will go! What I think is neat, with the CVT, the RPM's will stay as high as you want untill you back out of it. The CVT seamlessly moves through gear (belt?) ratios without notice. Really, the performance is as good as can be expected for a little 2.0 compact wagon. Next year the SRT-4 will be available. Turbo + AWD should be a lot more fun to drive. Yeah, you are pretty well wrapped up in plastic but what car under 17K isn't. You pretty much get what you pay for and what we paid for was an economical car with room for my 6'5" frame, wife, baby, and all the baby gear. And as I've said before, this thing is about 85% Mitsubishi so I felt very comfortable with our purchase. Funny thing, I used to be a die hard Ford guy. Now I've got two Chrysler products in my driveway.
