| Post subject: | My CRD purchase heart attack |
After years of waiting for the CRD to be released in ’05, I went to my favorite dealer to inquire as to when they would be available only to be told that they could not be sold in New York because NY had adopted the emission rules from the land of Fruits and Nuts. So I gave up on a CRD and bought a leftover ’04 sport gasser, however this summer I saw a nice low mileage ’05 CRD on Ebay and thought “its now or never” and bought it. With a friend we drove 7 hours to pick it up and was thrilled with the condition and paid for it and drove off about a ¼ of a mile to fill up for the trip home. Starting it up to leave the station, it didn’t sound right, but I wasn’t in tune with the normal sounds yet. Driving off it lost power and I nursed it back to the guy that had sold it to me. I didn’t know if I had been suckered (I didn’t know about Limp mode). He cleaned the air filter and when restarted it sounded fine. Not real happy or certain that I hadn’t bought a whole lot of trouble, or it it would make it home, I left for the 7 hour trip home which was uneventful. The CRD got 24.5 mpg and the gasser got an all time high 20mpg, which was normally 17-18. After 3 months I am happy with the purchase, but the “heart attack” of limp mode 5 minutes after I bought it will be remembered for life. |

I certainly hope you immediately installed a new air filter, fuel filter, and had the oil and filter changed - each is critical to Diesel function |

droptop.....so I knew you couldn't buy a new CRD in NY. But I didn't realize you could buy a used one in another State and DMV will let you register it with no problem in NY?? Anyway, good luck with your purchase. I have never even seen one yet with NY plates anyway. And I have only seen one with out of state plates in NY but couldn't get a real close look as it caught me off guard. |

There was no problem registering it.. as long as it has over 7500 miles on it, you can register it. But the Jeep dealer will look at you funny when you take it in the first time. Look for a dealer thats also a Dodge dealer who sells alot of diesel Rams. More info on registering it in NY at http://www.nysdmv.com/register.htm#register |

It is my understanding you can buy and register a used diesel with at least 7500 miles . Also if you happen to be out of state and due to an accident of massive failure of your car to the extent that you have to buy a new car you would then be allowed to bring a diesel home and register it. |

Droptop, Congrat's and welcome to the forum. Good advice on the fuel filter change and beware of the "air in fuel" problem. It sounds like that was the problem you where experiancing. |

I did take it in to transfer the warranty, get the NYS inspection and have them turn off that stupid automatic door lock. Every time I would try and open a door it would be locked. When he was done, the mechanic took it for a test drive to " make sure the doors didn't lock". I'm sure that wasn't the only reason.. he commented on how much power it had, and he was gone for about almost ten minutes. He also gave me a bit of good advice; "stock your own filters because none of the dealers in NY will have them" |

You're "Heart Attack" was most probably air in the filter head. To test for it, purge the filter head (there are tons of threads on this, I'm too old and flatulent to figure out how to find and post them for you, sorry).Anyhow, purge the air and tell us how much you had in there. Might be it. Usually is. Then unplug your Fuel Heater Element...check for air leaking in and burned out bits. This could be happeneing to make more than "normal" (yet still un-acceptable) amounts of air into your system. And leave it unplugged until Feb. or they recall the darn thing. That Link I have: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=24616&sid=fb770b5d850554d49d790b44486c3d70That air filter heating thing is really pissing me off. Forgive me, I think I'm getting to be one of those guys who shuffles about and mumbles about my obsessions. mumblemumbledamnDCengineersmumblemumblenoliftpumpwhatweretheythinkingmumbmlemumblefreakingheatingelementupintheairmumblemumblefirehazardmumblemumbel |
