Has anyone had to put in coolant this summer? I've had it go below the "cold" line twice, with the low coolant light coming on one of those times. From what I understand, this is a bad sign of a possible gasket leak or a warped head. Is this correct? Can the coolant "boil off", or is there some other reason I am losing coolant like this? I'm getting a sick feeling in my stomach...

Thanks!

Dave

Check around the water pump for signs of a leak. There should be a small inspection hole behind the pulley on the water pump. If the seal is bad inside coolant will leak from there.

Could be a head gasket, but chances are it's a leak somewhere. The head would only be warped if you overheated the engine.

I had a similar thing happen. But it happened VERY quickly. Fine in the morning. THen out of nowhere I had the Low Coolant show on the dash. Brought it in right away and it turned out to be a cracked hose. That was the early part of the summer. Hasn't happened since.

Ya, I had to add 1/2 a quart in July. It was really hot..... boiling sounds. I suspected that vapor was lost out of the cap.

Some loss slowely over time like that will happen, it will be more pronounced during summer and hot driving, IMO the only times I have seen a headgaskit go you know it could only be that, and nothing else.

I've never seen a "Minor" headgaskit leak.

Mine is slowly, very slowly dropping too. Had it since Feb of 06 and never even opened the coolant cap.

Chalk up another one. We just got the LOCOOL warning on the odometer readout. The coolant system has never been opened.

yeah mine is below the "cold limit" line when hot. Is that normal, what should I use to refill?

I had the low coolant light come on so I shut the engine off and checked coolant. Coolant was actually above cold line so I opened the cap and released some pressure. Started it back up and light was out and has not returned.

???

Hi Gary,

Keep in mind the cold line is only meant to be valid when the engine is cool and not running.

I had the light come on.
Topped it up and few days later it came back on.
I think I didn't put the cap back on properly so make sure you do put it back on properly.
It's like two notches and it's fully closed on the 2nd notch.

EGR coolant hoses....

I remember someone on the forum saying that their egr coolant lines were leaking at the egr. I don't know if those coolant line pull from the rest of the system but it wouldn't hurt to check....

Hope this helps,

Thanks Chris, I did know this. Libby was cold upon coolant check as I had just started it and shut it off immediately when I saw the LCWL.

Hi Gary,

Okay, I figured you probably did. :)

I bought some distilled water to top off the coolant. I'd like to look into methods of measuring the freeze protection of the mixture. Does anyone know what type of coolant this thing runs? (Wife has the CRD at work right now.)

Thanks!

- Chris
