Sit back, this will be a long one. So the last few weeks we have had an intermidant problem. The engine will suddenly die a few seconds after being started. I have tried to find a pattern, there is none. What I have noticed is that if I watch the wait to start light and it stays on more than the normal few seconds, and I start it, the light remains on and the engine will die shortly after starting. If the WTSL light goes out normally and I start it, it runs fine. If I watch and the light stays on, and I turn the key off BEFORE starting, then on again, ussually the light will go out and it will start and run normally. A few times it has taken me a few key cycles to get the light to go out and then in starts and runs fine.... I am leaning towards and air-in-filter issue, but also wonder if it could be the after market alarm....Just want to rule out one or the other before I take it to the dealer or the shop that did the alarm. What are you thoughts?? |

I wouldn't expect air in the fuel filter to affect the wait-to-start cycle times (lights). I don't think the computer can 'see' it until the engine trys to start and has to struggle to make pressure in the CP3. If the light turns out to be 'fine' - it could otherwise easily be the air thing. It would only take you a few minutes to find out... as the first start or two after bleeding out the air should be quick. Mark == Milner wrote: Sit back, this will be a long one.

Easy to eliminate the fuel head - pump the prime button ~5-6 times B4 starting WTS could be normal for this time of year - what's your ambient temps? |

WTS could be normal for this time of year - what's your ambient temps? Ambiant has ranged from low 30's to high 70's....I'm in Utah ![]() Saturday, it started fine, left home, it start bucking/missing/etc and died, restart, missed etc. got out primed and it started/ran fine.... Another thing leading me to air.... |

Sort of related... When you first turn the key on, all the idiot lights on the dash should come on briefly to prove that they work. I don't know what a "wait to start light" looks like, but I don't have a GLOW PLUG light, and my owner's manual lists that as an "if equipped" item. Could someone explain this to me? I know I have been feeding it diesel fuel, and gassers don't run too well on oil... So shouldn't I have glow plugs? And wouldn't I then also have a light for when I *do* need to wait to start? I'm coming into this CRD from a VW TDI, so I'm not just falling off the turnip truck here... But I thought it was bizarre that I don't seem to have any GP light in the dash. |

If your liberty is a diesel, then you have this wait-to-start light. You just haven't seen it come on. Depending on the ambient temps in your area it may only come on for a fraction of a second. The light is yellow and looks like a coil of wire. If its really cold out it might come on for 1-2 seconds. If its really really really cold it might come on for longer than 2 seconds. I live in Florida and if I look really close and dont blink I can see it flicker. The glow plugs on the CRD are made to heat up really quick so your average driver who has never owned a diesel before can get in and quickly turn the key to start without ever needing to worry about the glow-plug light. |

You have a glow plug light. It looks like a little yellow curley-cue and it lights up on the left side of your instrument panel (see manual). The reason you don't see it is that unless the temp outside is in the 60s it doesn't go on. If it's colder than that it goes on for 2-3 seconds max, even in sub freezing weather. You have to be looking for it to see it. |

I had the same symptoms. changed the fuel filter and it solved the bucking, the air in the system took a little longer to purge. after I had run a couple of tanks through, everything sealed up tight. Next time I change the filter, I will be using some O ring grease to get it to seal right off. |
