Hey everyone I figured I'd poll rear brake problems and demote Bonneville and Sons in Manchester NH I brought my CRD in because the left rear disk started grinding in the rear while I was on trip and that would seem premature on a 1 year old ( bought it as a 05 left over with 40miles in June 06) 2005 with only 26k on the clock. After accepting the vehicle they call a few hours later and tell me that brakes in the rear are shot and both disks and pads need to be replaced and for a mere $435.00 they would be glad to do so. They also ask me if I want to change my front and rear diff fluid and tranny fluid and rotate my tires. Both diffs had been done and so had the tranny tires were rotated 2k ago. So I said no they the charged me 44.00 for break inspection even after listing "Free 23 Point Inspections". So, extremely miffed I goto Autozone and buy new pads and rotors for $88.00 and swap everything out in 30 minutes. My outer brake pad on both side were completely warn one was metal on metal the other the pad was just low. The inside pads were barely 1/2 used and Bonneville said nothing was wrong. A local mechanic was over speaking to my father (he has a garage) and said "Wow, looks like your calipers are sticking" Also printed on the front of the Duralast box was a sections the had 6 pictures and said diagnose break problems. One picture was a mirror image of pads and listed "Sticking Calipers" as the issue. I called Chrysler to see if I could get any assistance and I couldn't. So now I'm out $132.00 and thats not counting on having to replace the torque converter on my own dime unless I want a grandma mobile instead of a truck. |

I have 23K mi on my CRD and haven't had any problems yet. I don't think they are the strongest brakes I have had but are sufficient at this point in time. |

If you talk to the Les Schwab techs around here, they replace the calipers when they do a brake job. Evidently, they fail the way you're describing often enough to make it worthwhile... I just did my Suburban's front disks, and the right side had torn the rubber sleeve that protects the piston - possibly when it was fully extended (it had started grinding - no wear sensors for the '93). I'm told what happens is that the rubber cracks or is torn, and moisture gets in and rusts, and then the piston doesn't retract completely, instead 'riding' the disk and causing increased wear and premature failure. But, then, the reason I stopped using LS is that they repeatedly failed to lube the pins that the caliper 'floats' on, and they would rust and stick - resulting in the same problem. Amateurs... ![]() Since then, I've done it myself in an evening. Rotors are about $30 when needed, calipers are $30-ish, and decent pads can be found for about $15/set. Money saved feeds the mechanic! ![]() Mark -- bugnout wrote: Right rear caliper stuck, about 34k, replaced it and the pads myself

33K and no real problems. I will say that all KJ's have had brake problems, particularly in the rear, just check the "general" forum and I once had the right rear drag for about 8 miles. It only happened once and was self correcting. |

I voted "no problems" but I have had the same groaning and clunking in the rear brakes when the weather is damp or cold. that a lot of other people have had. This has happened since the very beginning. I know that everyone says that is "normal" but it is quite annoying. So, technically, nothing has been replaced yet, but I don't consider that brake noise as perfectly OK. |

There is a TSB for rear brakes dragging in the morning with replacement pads and retainer clips. I had mine done at 11,000 miles and back at 38,000 miles. Related to damp weather in the NW????? |

Can you tell which TSB? My rear brakes are completely worn out (50Kmiles) and when I went to the dealer last month they said it was "normal"... Pfft, never heard of rear brakes dying before front ones... Law of physic says all the weight transfer up front during breaking! |

It could be applying the rear brakes without you knowing it. |

That's a good point, in fact the previous owner got the ABS module replaced under warranty... maybe for that same exact problem? Could it mean the ABS sensors on the rear brakes are either too sensitive or dirty? |

I had a sticking l/r caliper. Replaced under warranty. All the rear-disc brake vehicles I've owned have had the rear brakes wear out faster than the front. They are smaller and injest a lot more road debris. |

Ditto. I had grunting and squeaking noises for the first couple minutes of driving in the morning. Took it in around 10,000 miles and they replaced pads and clips per the TSB for free. |

Could it mean the ABS sensors on the rear brakes are either too sensitive or dirty? The rear brakes applied for traction control along with reducing throttle when spinning tires to a certain extent. Works when getting stuck in the snow to applied power to traction wheel. |

50K no real "problems" but rotors are a tad bit warped. |
