Post subject:  07 Tundra V8 has Torque conver problems
Slightly off topic but: In the October 22 issue of Automtive News there's an article titled "Tundra owners groumble over rumble". It seems that a possible 100,000 5.7L V8 models have torque converter problems. The problem sounds just like our CRD's converter problems when they don't unlock while coming to a stop :wink: It occures with as little as 1000 on the clock and even September 07 manufatured models are experiencing it. The whole story sounds like a "instant replay" as some dealers are denying it ever happens and a few saying one or two but Toyoto's badge has been tarnished :lol: The transmission is a US made 6 speed made by Asin the same company that built the bullet proof AW4 that was used in the Cherokee behind the 4.0L six cylinder. Toyoto has determined the problem is the torque converter but dosen't know why or what yet. Could this be another oppertunity for SunCoast, I doubt it as Toyoto owners seem to be the put the key in and drive it type and then talk about reliability :lol:

toyota really better get it together with their stuff. with american manufactures introducing interesting models with updated technology and korean manufactures gaining a following, if toyota keeps slipping up they could see some hard times in the future...

They had the same picture over on TDR a while back. Consensus seemed to be that there may have been some photoshop editing going on with that pic - that a trailer of that size loaded to a considerable weight would have been a tough haul for anything short of an OTR rig, much less a Duramaxipad - or that they were simply using the bowtie to reposition an empty trailer during the event.

Isn't the first time Toyota had problems like this... remember the v6 engine sludge problem in the Camry/Highlander a few years back? And the new Tacoma/FJ Cruiser's initially had some rear differential problems.

Still, sounds like the supplier may be part of the issue here, as Toyo doesn't build the parts in question themselves (they didn't build the differential/axle either).

I think it is a wee bit premature to talk about Toyota slipping and being beaten out by domestic automakers. Chrysler just laid off 12,000 and is canceling numerous model lines, while GM is maintaining it's status as world's largest automaker by the slimmest of margins (sadly, by selling super cheap cars in China to offset market losses in the North America and Europe). And Ford continues to bleed money and market share.

Nice to know that the TC problems with our CRD's are not a problem unique to Jeep, but the overall trend for US automakers ain't one any American ought to be happy about.

These torque converter issues are not going to stop people from buying up the new Tundra's like hot cakes because they are great trucks. People continue to buy Dodge trucks with automatics and will continue to do so no matter how lousy the torque converters are.

I love my '96 Landcuiser because it is indestuctable and rides better than a new SUV. I hope Toyota finds a solution to the problem because I will buy a new Tundra if and when they put a diesel in them.

Yeah I have been waiting for this concept to debut at SEMA for quite some time now. I first saw it a few days ago on the SEMA website. I think it lived up to all the hype. I just hope Toyota does not dash my hopes like the Gladiator concept did. I think the Gladiator would have been the greatest truck ever, but leave it up to DX to mess with a good thing. Heaven forbid an American automaker be successful. They probably don't know how to handle success here in the states.


Ahh heck, while I am ranting, DX introduces an unbelievable concept in the Rescue but they decide it is too big of a risk so they introduce the Commander which fell flat on its face and has been removed from the line up after only 3 years. WOW
