What tires and size work best when using stock rims and no lift?

You will probably get a zillion different answers. The largest tires you can fit without a lift are either 235/75/16 or 245/70/16. I went with the slightly taller 235 size, and in hindsight regret it a little bit as snow tires in that size are really hard to find (so that they match my spare).

As far as makes and models go, the popular ones are:

BF Goodrich AT - old school AT tire, very well made and durable, $$$
Bridgestone Dueler REVO - newer design, great all-around tire, also $$$

General Grabber AT2 - copies some of the design of the BF Goodrich, pinned for studs (for use in snow), $
Firestone Destination AT - uses some of the technology found in the REVO, but different tread design. Durable and much cheaper. $

Other folks have had good luck with Nokian Vattiivas, Toyo Open Country, etc... www.tirerack.com is a good place to compare tires and read reviews (though their selection is a bit limited in truck tires).

235/75/16s will give you a 30" tire basically...which is what Jeep should have fit from the factory.

It depends what you do with your CRD. I install 235/70/16 because I didn't want to lose torque or power as the larger 30 inch tires would. I'm not saying it would be a lot but when pulling a 3,000 lbs trailer through a mountain pass, every bit of HP and torque counts. If you off road the larger tires would be better.

How about some more specifics for the BF Goodrich ATs? They list about 10 variations on tirerack.com.

I have been using Kumho 798 in 225-75-16 on stock rims and because they are H-speed rated. I am getting ready to order a set of 245-70-17 H-speed rated next. They have gotten me everywhere I wanted to go on and off road mostly in 2wd.

225-75-16 are 29lbs each
245-70-16 are 31lbs each

Given that most of the CRD owners have some interest in mileage, there are important issues with tire selection.

Weight is one. A heavy AT tire will take more energy to spin up. It is probably a good idea to put "low weight" as a plus in the selection. The BFGs are pretty darn heavy... see "tirerack.com" for weight comparisons. The bigger the diameter, the more they weight, of course.

It turns out that the trade off is in the "how bad do I need a bullet proof tire for off-road" vs "how much I want to pay at the pump for city driving".

I dont believe that a particular brand stands out as light and strong. Maybe others can help with this info.

Just installed a set of 235/70/16 BS Revos on Cragar Chrome Soft 80 16x7 4.5" BS wheels to run for the winter on my wife's Libby. Much better than the Goodyear POS tires that came with the vehicle. They have done well on wet and lightly snow covered roads so far. Haven't been through any deep snow yet.

Had to do the cutting/hammer mod on the pinch welds and a little sawzall action to the front air dam due to the reduced backspacing. Still have a little rubbing on the front side of the wheel well at full lock, may need a heat gun to do a little reshaping of the inner fender liner. The tire forum has a plethora of information on tire preference, tire sizes, wheels, modifications etc.

If your looking for an online tire store, you may want to give www.RoadwayWholesaleTire.com
This is the second set of tires I have purchased from them and they have always had the best pricing and shipping rates with prompt FedEx delivery.

I'm currently running Nokian Vaatiiva 245/70/16 and love the tires! I've been using Nokian tires for several years and I cannot concieve of a better all-season, all-terrain tire. Rides great, quiet, extremly good in the snow, good off road traction, and priced lower than most "top tier" tires.

BFG TA KOs, have had them on 3 4x4s and have had great results. Currently running them and they are doing great.

I ran Yokohama Geolanders on this jeep and they were gone after 12K, just my results, but not great milage.

I guess I will third the statement. Really good tires on snow and ice.

I have General Grabber AT2s in size 245/70 16 (no lift yet) which are great so far. Got them last summer and had them off road a little bit and worked great! We had a snowstorm last Saturday and they did very well in that too. Good all year round tire. Here are some pics...
