My wife gets home yesterday evening and wants me to put her "Tinker Bell" steering wheel cover on. She had the wheel turned 180, so I got my keys and started her up and turned the wheel and she died. I tried again and nothing. I pop the hood and prime the the fuel filter and get back in and started her back up and she died again. About this time my wife is looking teary eyed, we just got her the Jeep last Thursday, a payoff of her graduating nursing school and us paying off a bunch of bills. I tell her to take the rest of the groceries in and I will figure out what is going on. So I tried priming and restarting again with the same results. Then it hits me, wonder if these keys have a chip in them, so I go back in and grab hers and tell her my thoughts, and her response, " O'yeah, the keys have a chip in them and if you use a key without it the car will die in 2 seconds, I read that in the manual on the way home the other night." So I take her keys back and she starts right up. With the steering wheel turned around, I was able to get the Tinker Bell cover on, and by the way that was a real pain trying to stretch that thing over the steering wheel. So at lunch its off to the dealership to see how much a key will be.

It is my professional opinion that the Jeep refused to keep running once it saw the steering wheel cover. The only reason it gave in is because it didnt like to see the lady cry 8)

Is your key just a plain steel key then?

And you used to be able to buy the sentry key blanks on ebay..have them cut for your jeep and program them to work.

Not sure how much the dealer costs, but if they are outrageous ebay probly still has them

the stealership will bend you over for a new reprogrammed key. I seem to recall its like $200 bucks...maybe a bit less. let us know the cost after you talk to them...inquiring minds want to know. 8) 8)

You can find keys on eBay everywhere. They even have the Sentry keys that don't have the keyless entry on them for really low prices. You will, however, need two programmed keys to make it work or you'll have to go to the dealer and pay them to program the new key.

You can buy blank keys w/ the chip inside off Ebay for vastly less than the dealer will charge. It does not take any special tools to program them, the Jeep will do it itself if you follow the correct procedure.

I bought my spare keys online for about 1/3 of what the dealer wanted.

The key in question is just a plain key, as far as I know, with a black Jeep logo(is there anyway to tell if it is a sentry key with out keyless entry?). $130 for the key with keyless entry and $50 for a standard key, plus an additional $30 to have them programmed. I will check into the keys off ebay.

The blanks are cheaper on ebay - but you have to have 2 functioning keys to program a new one - so if you're starting with 1 you have to go to the dealer to get the second one made.
The programming sequence is also in the manual.

I bought one off of ebay, took it to my local locksmith to have it cut. They carried the same blank for a couple bucks cheaper. Call them before you order one from ebay.

If you just purchased the Jeep from a dealer tell them to get you a second key. You shouldn't have to pay for one. A friend pof mine bought a used Honda van and the dealer wouldn't make him a second key yet had nerve enough to hound him about bringing the second key for the car they traded.

I believe that Chrysler Sentry keys are gray and the plain (non-transponder) versions are black.
I bought a sentry key off eBay about two weeks ago for under $20.

You do need 2 working keys to be able to program any additional keys. I believe you can store up to 6 total.

The process is quite simple:
1) Enter working key # 1 into the switch and turn ON (no need to start, just turn the ignition on)
2) Wait 6-10 seconds and remove the key (must be longer than 5 but less than 15 seconds)
3) Insert working key # 2 and turn the ignition on.
4) After 5-10 seconds a chime will sound - remove the key.
5) Insert a new key - after 5-10 seconds a chime will sound - it is now programmed.
6) Repeat step 5 for any additional keys

longview, I believe that you are correct, from what I been able to pull up on Google searches, the sentry keys are gray, mine is black. I plan on picking up 2 of them off of ebay, I will get one programmed by the dealer, and I will do the other one myself.

kjfishman, I bought it from a used car lot, I will call them tongiht, but I bet they will throw up the "as is no warranty".

I dont know about you but when I sell or buy a car it is "as is, where is, all sales final"

Hard for me to go demanding something else when the sale is already final eh?

Sam I agree 100% :P Going back and asking for more might even make the dealer less ready to sell the next one "AS IS WHERE IS" :D I prefer it that way myself though:lol:

You might want to check with your Chrysler Group Dealership, as I do believe, the.... "Tinkerbell" steering wheel cover was on the latest memorandum outlining
performance enhancements that voided the warranty and ALSO resulted in an IMMEDIATE spanking and removal of ONE "Trail Rated" badge.

Not only is is a Tinker Bell steering wheel cover, but a also Tinker Bell fuzzy dice hanging from the rear vier mirror and a window sticker, that she is still waiting for me to put on. The fuzzy dice come down when I'm driving . I'm about to get an extended warranty, I don't think that I'm going to disclose this to them.

I agree with you guys somewhat on the "as is", but I did not have the key in question until after we signed the dotted line. I didn't get a chance to call them last night, I will try to tonight.

Picked up my 2006 CRD 3 weeks ago, only got one key. It cost near $200 for the key+taxes+programing. I ordered a third key off the internet which I can now program myself, because I have two keys, so I hope to not have any more key issues. But you need two to DIY.

That's awesome that you can get one programmed at a dealership for free Click!!

I just bought two new keys. I got one that is exactly like the two I got when I bought the Jeep (Door lock/unlock, panic, and rear glass buttons), which I got at www.autotransponder.com for $70.

I also wanted one that didn't have all the buttons on it because I spend a lot of time in the sand. So I got another one from All Things Jeep for $22. It is transponder-compatible and it looks like a rock. Thought it was kinda cool.

Ohhhh that is cool. did you get model #692960(tan)? That will keep me from mixing up the keys for my truck and the crd, I'm always afraid I will put the jeeps key in the truck and it will get stuck. The keyless entry key on www.autotransponder.com is $92.40 now. All Things Jeeps site says that they must be cut by the dealership, is this correct?
