well I was wondering if anybody could expand on this idea Darby threw out.. these are quotes from my bumper thread... http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=26009&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=195

Ok, KJ is at the fab shop getting bumper on. the fab guy says no problem. i hopefully will pick it up tomorrow afternoon. his only concern is how hes going to do the fender and flare deal over the top of the bumper, also he doesnt believe he can do anything about the factory fogs and or holes. so Im just going to have him wire up the PIAA's and figure out how I will just cover up the fog holes in the grille.....

"" Some "cold air ducts" out of those fog light holes

As for the air ducts...It would be easy to run some ducting from the "holes" (especially the passenger side) up to the mouth of the air intake...

Don't know on the driver's side, but you could take some flexible accordian style hose from the passenger's side hole and run it around the radiator and into the the bottom of the air box. Not much fabrication to do that. ""

So where would I cut into the airbox? how big should the hole be? Pros / Cons of doing this????

I bet people here will be mostly against it because of how popular the V6 airbox mod is - locating the intake point higher off the ground. You'd basically be making a direct path for rain and debris that's closer to the pavement than stock. Definitely get cold air though. I'd do it if I was in your situation and lived in a dry climate. That's what air filters are for.

Being that I live in the South West we don't get much rain

If you make the hose/ducting go straight up and drill a couple of rain release holes near the bottom...you will probably be OK. I have been working on something that gets air up to the 2002 airbox using two slots at the front grill. Seems to be working OK...not finished yet.

Of course testing is the fun part

The 2002 airbox mod does get you cleaner air into the air box...but...most likely less air at WOT. That is why I am testing some ducting to get the benefit of the 2002 box with the air supply of the 2006 airbox.

Post subject:  Without the 02/03 airbox

I was actually moved to action after reading several posts and pulled the front grill off to see what the hub-bub was about. I was surprised how easy the grill came off...I've had clip-on sunglasses but I've never experienced a clip-on grill before

I am sure that 02/03 mod help but maybe not in the way intended. The un-modified air box is scooping most of the air off the ground. Pulling off the grill, you can see that there is a plastic shield/shroud specifically made so that the air is sucked from behind the passenger-side fog light. The sheild effectively blocks the air coming through the grill and onto the radiator/intercooler combo behind the grill.

So, I think that the air, unmodified comes up behind plastic bumper, behind the headlight/foglight assembly and into the air intake. I can see where someone that tailgates in a rainy-road mist snowy situation may end up with a damp air filter  The 02 mod may keep it cleaner but I am not sure it get you "more" air at WOT.

Which leads me to another thread where I think Darby and a few others discussed sheilding the grill for faster warm-up and effciency. Looking at all of the shrouds, it seems that ALL of the air coming through that grill is meant for the cooling system and not for consumption. This leads me to believe that blocking the front grill will only impact the intercooler/radiator/cooling system and have no impact on the amount of air going into the system.

Thoughts?

An observation on the stock air box and water... I live in the rainy Northwest, and a few months back my wife drove our CRD to Seattle and back. The drive back (180 miles) was entirely in the rain. My wife drives like a maniac in the city, but on the interstate she leaves a good 5 car lengths open between her and the next vehicle at all times.

When she got home, I cracked open the air box... there was standing water in the bottom of it, and the filter was damp. When I did the V6 air box mod 24 hours later (the parts had come in the mail while she was away), the Jeep still had standing water in the dimples in the plastic at the bottom of the air box. I noticed a similar amount of standing water after a fishing trip back in early summer, 1.5 hours of driving when I was the only car on the road for most of the trip.

I posted photos of my air box mod... you can see the water and dirt at the bottom of the box, and the bugs, twigs, seeds, etc... stuck in my air filter from the stock intake. This was on a filter with less than 3000 miles on it.

I think the stock CRD air box design was intended to take advantage of the air pressure on the front of the vehicle at highway speeds to dry and force a bit more air into the box. Unfortunately, it also forces whatever else is in the air at the time as well, such as water and snow, into the air box. A very poor design. While the V6 mod may not increase overall airflow, it likely does decrease the rate at which your filter gets gummed up and restricted.
