I was at the local Jeep dealer today to pick someone up who was leaving their car for service. While waiting, I wandered around the lot. They had one CRD Grand Cherokee (2007). The sticker was OVER $45,000. No wonder its still on the lot. That cost is more than double what I paid for my '05 Liberty when new.

No one in their right mind would pay that for a Jeep (even with a MERCEDES diesel)

Clearly, the people who determine price points for Jeep must be Meth Heads, or Tweekers.

I read for 3k more you can get the MB. The MB would hold its value better than a Jeep. The Liberty CRD was the most diesel for the money out there. If the GC is how diesels will be priced than I better make the CRD last.

Just to help put things in perspective, my 2005 GC Limited with all the goodies was stickered at 43K and a loaded Liberty CRD (2005) limited was stickered at 36K. If a 2007 with diesel is only 2K more then the 05 model without diesel, that doesn't sound unreasonable. Few people buy at sticker anyway so it's a little misleading when it comes to the purchase price.

The dealer where I bought my CRD has had a GC CRD on their lot since last Easter. A dealer near where I work has had two for at least three months. These guys gotta be taking it in the shorts on floorplanning charges (unless DCX is cutting them a "deal")

Time to put more perfume on these pigs! :lol:

It's Limited with leather, sunroof, select trac, etc. Did that Liberty have 4.5k in options I don't know about? If it had anything above our Limited you'd have to add that to the sticker mentioned by the OP on the GC, because it's not a normal option.

I just priced an '08 Liberty on Jeep's website. With EVERYTHING (including smoker's group) it came to $32,965 before discount.

I saw a new KK Limited at the dealer that was stickered higher then my 2006 CRD Limited. Big surprise that. Then I walked over and looked at a Grand CRD which was stickered at $40K. That price didn't seem so unreasonable after I had seen the KK gasser sticker.

My 06 Liberty Sport was stickered at $32k, and it wasn't even close to loaded. But the CRD's were going for a serious premium here in the NW as pretty much all diesels sell very well here(including the new GC). Of course I only paid $24k when all was said and done, due to company connections(employee discount via my gf's father).

I think they realized that they were overpricing the product:

The trail-rated Laredo offers 7,400 pounds of towing capacity, and combined fuel economy around 20 mpg—all for the price of approximately $35,000. Chrysler also reduced the price of the Limited and Overland diesel options by $1,000.

I test drove a left over '07 Limited Grand Cherokee CRD last week - finally. Many things left me un-happy.

First - cargo capacity is 100lbs less on the Grand than then liberty. So, you have more cargo room but less weight capacity??? It's great that it can tow 7600lbs, but after 4 large adults and a full tank of fuel and the tongue weight of your trailer you'd better have all of your cargo in the trailer your towing. Now, why did they not put the CRD in the Commander? It has a gargo capacity that is 200lbs greater than the Liberty.

Second - with Driver Seat all the way back, rear leg room was about 3-4 inches while my liberty was at least quadruple that. For me at 6'9" tall I have the same leg room in both front seats all the way back. All the supposed extra space in the Grand is in the rear cargo area.

Third - Head room is much less with the Grand.

Fourth - Practically gone is the sound of any diesel engine, which was depressing for me but I'm sure most people like. But still...

And Finally - It sits and revs up to nearly 3000 to 3500 rpm before the transmission lets the diesel put any power to the ground - sound familiar??? It feels slushy all over town in City driving.

Only positive is that if you really mosh the go pedal, it's a rocket ship after 3000+ rpm. But it's so weird because, when moshing the go pedal, the transmission shifts like a total gasser and the diesel at high rpms sounds like a gasser!

I don't know, it was just a downer for me. I was all excited until the whole transmission high rpm thing showed up - the same fix forced on me at 14,000 miles now comes factory in the Grand. At least in my liberty on the freeway I can still lug along at 1600rpm and feel that torque feel, but not in this thing, just felt like a gasser.

They should have put it in the Commander to allow for real towing and at least a moderate cargo carrying capacity.

I wonder if the Benz (ML) does this funky high revving thing or if it is just another crap Torque Converter thing? Maybe we test drive that and find out? I think in the Benz, the motor is tuned better too, more HP stock than the same motor in the Grand.

One thing I love about driving the wife's Jetta TDI... 6 spd automatic that shifts like a manual diesel... poops at 2000 rpm or so. Fun to stomp it and hear it growl and quickly work through the gears.

Yep, sounds like business as usual - detune an engine that's a multiple-of-four-figures option so they can save $20 on a crappy torque converter.

And from the sound of things, Cerebrus is going even further down this road of extreme cost-cutting. They've issued marching orders for CJD to find ways to use even cheaper parts in the powertrains, and hired five "financial advisors" to keep track of every penny going out the door.

My take - Cerebrus is well on it's way to finishing what Daimler started - they're gutting the corpse and selling off anything they can get money out of - test facilities, real estate, assembly plants - until all that's left is the dealer network, then they'll have a reduced price firesale on what's left to another OEM anxious to expand it's distribution chain, or use it to sell rebadged Chinese junk made by Chery.

Um, yeah, because thats a great long term vision.....

Perhaps they are just cutting the crap so they can build a profitable quality product. I don't think they are going to toss quality when they are offering those lifetime warranties.

At least give it a chance before dishing out such pessimism. The new UAW contracts give some real hope for US automakers, the falling dollar gives them a ton more.

Oh, horsecrap! Those "lifetime" warranties are a joke, nothing more than a marketing tool. Read the fine print - miss one scheduled maintenance, and it's null and void.

How in god's name are you going to improve quality when you're selling off your testing and development facilities, and telling the troops to use even cheaper parts on the assembly line, in the powertrain no less?

Cerebrus's "strategic vision" seems to be to outsource everything overseas for cheap labor and parts, with only the dealer network and final sale left in the US.

Um, that is NOT how the Lifetime Warranties work. You can get your maintinence done anywhere, even a non-Chrysler shop(or do it yourself and save receipts). The only 'mandatory' maintinence is a check every 'x' number of miles(I believe its like 30k or something) which is FREE. The warranty is no better or worse than their existing powertrain warranty, the advantage is that its Lifetime of original owner(the drawback being that its non-transferrable).

Come on, I know your a pessimist, but geez, they can't win for anything they do in your eyes, or at least thats the way it seems. At least give them props when they do something right, and don't diss the new plan before you have even seen it in action. If you truly knew best how to run an automaker, would you be on a forum posting about it or would you be beating the Japanese at their own game? ;)

I think their long term vision should focus on establishing a positive brand identity beyond their big pickups and mini-vans. To do that they need to 1) differentiate themselves from the rest of the market, 2) improve quality, 3) improve their marketing.

I haven't seen anything out of them so far that implies they are making strides on any of the three. I know that they cannot turn on a dime, but the first model's I'd have canceled are the 21 mpg "hybrids" and the 18 mpg hemi passenger cars.

I hate hear that about Cerebrus. I personally don't like those warrenties anyway. I would rather opt out of thewarrenty after a resonable period and get some dough back. That way I could mod the truck and not void a warrenty I paid for. Anyway, back to cost. I priced out a VW Tourget 2 the other day online just for kicks. Over $72K. Granted, that little thing with 500+ foot/pounds of torq would be a rocket, but come on.
