I've noticed lateley while idling in drive or nuetral; I get a small surge every 7 seconds. It makes the RPM jump about 1/10". Then there is a pressurized relief sound along with a heavy click of an eletrical motor and the RPM comes back down the 1/10". Then a metallic plate spinning and rubbing on another plate sound comes in and then fades away.
This seems to be more prevalent when cool. But still present when warm.
Also the turbo seems to be making more noise as I let off the go pedal after accelerating.

I'm concerned, but not sure if its a bad turbo.

Anyone else getting the same? or should I just test the turbo?

Sounds like either your AC compressor kicking on and off or the viscous heater kicking on and off. Although I wouldnt think the heater should be kicking on a whole lot just yet, especially after the vehicle is already warmed up.

I got this "grinding" sound coming from the turbo, but only under the following 2 conditions: MAF sensor is plugged in, rpms are between 2000 and 2200.

My turbo was grinding from Day 1. I bought this CRD over another just because I could hear the turbo spool up better, similar to my truck. 3 weeks later when I shut the vehicle off in my garage I could hear the last revolution of the turbo grind. Fought with dealer for 3 weeks over this finally they removed the turbo and it had a 1/2 inch of play in the impeller shaft. They said it was grinding on the exhaust side....yeah right. I think you can take the intake boot off and feel for any slop.

sounds like AC pump, try running with the defrost off, I think the AC is in action even if it is not selected while using defrost.

what about a valve type ticking at idle? mine has started doing it recently, or I just recently noticed.

Mine has had a loud audible tick since shortly after I purchased at 107 miles. 39k late still ticks...

Hasn't happened again since that day. Seems to do it for a period of about a day every 1-2 months. Possibly when the ground is wet. The vents were on "head and feet"(not defrost), AC not on, and I think was turned to red for heat.
Sounds like an electrical component starting and drawing current and causing a small RPM bump. Every 7 seconds it starts then kicks off; then a sound of metal plate sliding against metal plate grinds to a halt, from a location of low and up front(enigine/trans area).
I'm still getting some turbo horn but I think its not related. Seems like the cooler air temp's are messing with my turbo.
:?: Can fuel quality affect turbo? :?:
Because it took about 7 seconds to start this morning, when usually its 1/2 second (since the lift pump).
Temps have been 40's.

I'm still trying to pin point this. It does seem to be the cold, and its happening more often now.
Can someone point out where the Viscous Heater would be in the manual(can't find it, or don't know exactly what I looking for)?

If it is the viscous heater, it should only turn on once until the engine is warmed up right?

Is it idling rough, is it coming from the alternator? I got my alternator replaced last week and oh wow let me tell you what a difference. Its like they put a complete new motor in this thing. It purrs so quiet and smooth now when idling, its ridiculous.

Hi Endurance,

I'll take this opportunity to ask a question. When we shut a power window at night with the headlights on, I notice that the headlights dim when the window reaches the upper limit of its travel even with the engine running. I know a motor will draw more current when it's stopped, but I find it hard to believe that the alternator cannot maintain voltage to keep the headlights stable when a single window motor reaches its stop. Does yours do this? Does anyone else's? I've even noticed the headlights flicker for the barest moment when I touch the brake pedal and the brake lights go on.

Alternators lose load capability at idle. Every car I've ever owned has a voltage drop when a significant load is switched in at idle.

You should see the lights dim on the Dodge Cummins when the grid heaters come on - talk about a blow dryer!

There's some serious AMPS happening in there...

With automotive electronics, I don't think the goal is to regulate voltage to a fine degree. I'm used to seeing voltage varying from 13.2 to 14.5 just by changing RPM and without any significant load. Anything sensitive to voltage typically has it's own internal regulation - e.g. the radio / sound system.

So - it's not just load but the fact that they're not trying that hard to regulate it, and the lights are sensitive enough to voltage variations for us to see the difference.

I actually just noticed the same thing in my 2006 Liberty CRD. It finally got "cold" here in Dallas (meaning 30's) and I was running the defrost from a cold start and everytime I would stop at a light and idle I would notice the engine tick and the tach jump slightly. If I turned the defrost off the tick would stop.

Did anyone ever figure out what your issue was?

From page #209 in the 2006 Liberty Owners Manual:

"Floor:

Air flows through the floor outlets located under
the instrument panel and through the outlets located
in the rear of the center console. Slight airflow from
the defrost outlet, located at the base of the windshield,
may be noticed. The air conditioning system has been
enabled in Floor mode to provide less humid air, especially
when heat is used. This will help you reduce or
prevent window fogging in high humidity conditions.

This function cannot be disabled. You may still select the
desired amount of heat using the temperature control
dial. The heated air will simply be drier and less prone to
condensing on cold window surfaces."

From page #210 in the 2006 Liberty Owners Manual:

"On air conditioned vehicles, the compressor will operate
when in the Mix or Defrost modes and when the outside
temperature is approximately 30°F (-1°C) to provide
additional defrost/defog.[/u]

darn I thought someone else was also hearing the idle ticking...doesn't run rough, just ticks when holding on the brakes in drive.

Is only audible with the windows down and close to a wall (sound reflecting off the wall).

Mine will tick at idle after startup on a cooler morning (just enough for the glow plugs to work) and after I turn the lights on. Its not the A/C, it is the alternator in my case. When the engine is hot and the battery is charged, it doesn't seem to do it. No big deal.
