Lately we have been wondering whether the 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD was our best purchase. We have replaced the fuel filter, cleaned sensors because of the check engine light. We get excellent MPG and the jeep is reliable. In all of these problems the Jeep continues to run. I hesitate to jinx myself further. We are over 50,000 miles so all that we have is the powertrain warranty.

When I got home and turned off the Jeep (completely off no key in the ignition) I heard a clicking mechanical sound. That time I did not hear it when I started the Jeep. The next day my niece started the vehicle for me and she told grandma that the Jeep isn't supposed to make that noise. When I stopped at the parking garage, clicking noises for about one minute after the vehicle is shut off. When we leave the garage, the clicking starts the minute I turn the key to the on position (I have started the vehicle.)

When I got home, we opened the hood and the sound is coming from the actual engine area on the driver's side. No fan hitting anything. I have normal starting and driving. No loss of fuel mileage. Just this clicking. Anyone else?

We are in the St. Louis metropolitan area and if anyone knows of a good Jeep/Diesel mechanic, we would prefer that to the dealerships.

Isn't it crazy how dirty the MAF sensor gets? What's in that diesel fuel?
Lady, I think you just made a hell of a mistake putting diesel in your Jeep....

The AFC (a valve that throttles air on the intake just before the EGR) will click after the car is turned off. It is supposed to be clicking once, which is the valve returning to the open position after having closed for the shudder free shutdown process.
Perhaps the valve is not opening completetly and the motor is trying in vain to get it all the way open, for instance.

I agree on the AFC (or FCV as it's sometimes called) going out.

If it's on the driver's side it's more likely the FCV. The boost pressure solenoid is on the far passenger side.

This is definitely on the driver's side. We changed the fuel filter and it was very near that area. I thought it might be a fan hitting something, I moved belts out of the way, but it is definitely that side of the vehicle.

We are taking it to my cousin's shop tomorrow. He is a very good mechanic, but the drive to the shop is horrific. But, getting this looked at right is more important.

Thanks so much.

If you're still running with the factory CCV (no filtering or external venting), then the FCV is most likely really gummed up and at the least, severely taxed (it's a motor-actuated butterfly valve, but it is removeable and clean-able, which most people think will greatly extend life.)

To verify this, you can remove the driver's side intercooler hose with the engine off. turn the key to the on position (not start) and see if you can hear the clicking clearly. Assuming everyone on the thread is correct, it''ll be loud with the hose off. If you're lucky, it's just clogged with soot and the motor is skipping it's gears and is fixable. If the gears are damaged, you may have to shell out the bucks for a new FCV.

Dan

My cousin said that the problem is in the EGR and the programming. He tried, but in St. Louis he cannot get the parts only the dealers can. Whereever he looked, he said that there are 250 Jeep Liberty CRDs sitting in St. Louis that have been bought back by Chrysler.

Now, I have to hunt through the threads for info on the EGR for my computer (il)literate husband.
