I was just checking my fluid today because anytime my crd is warm and I back out of a parking spot and put it in drive I get a weird hesitation for the first 20-30 seconds the everything is fine. When the engine is completely cold or I only stopped somewhere for under 5 min everything is fine. So I'm thinking it's either low tranny fluid or air in the fuel.
Anyway I checked the fluid and it looks low but I'm going to check it again before I add any just to be sure.

Here is the real problem when I put the transmission dip stick back on the hole tight the engine vibrates it loose almost to the point it is either not or it's just barely sealing the tube.
Any of you guys have the same problem?
Next time I'm at the dealership I'm going to ask them to check it, maybe I have a defunct dip stick.

I had the same problem. I would back out until it hit the hood (no, it did not come through the hood).
I used duct tape to hold it in, but I got tired of looking at grey duct tape holding my engine together.
Went to the dealership and showed them. Had them write it up. (for future waranty purposes).
At this request, they ordered a new dipstick. It came in after 1 month. Thank God for duct tape.
We measured the new stick and it was the wrong one. Ordered another one. Came in after 2 months. TGFDT.
I made sure we measured this one. It was correct. Put it in and it has not backed out since this past summer.
My suggestion-have your dealer get you a new dip stick.

Another quick question, does anyone know the difference between the low and full lines? On my old Mercedes it's 1 Cup but I'm guessing the jeep is deferent.

Someone on here mentioned that they put a slight bend in the dipstick. That is enough to hold it in place.

That will work if you have the correct dipstick. It you have the wrong one (i.e., too short or too long) then that is another problem.

I had that too. Dipstick would reverse itself about 10-20 centimeters out of the tube. Problem went away by itself. My dipstick is made from two parts. I believe you can have the dipstick in in two positions. One bends it away from the assembly of the two sticks and one bends into the assembly of the two sticks. Try changing which way it bends and problem should go away.

Alternatively just put it back in, it will slowly turn in the tube cased by the vibration and find its own place to settle. Keep putting it back in. I had to do this two times before it was ok.

DocB, I have the same problem in my 06 CRD. You mentioned the dealer finally got you the correct length dip stick. What was the length of the metal part of the correct stick ?

There's a TSB for that hesitating problem. Seems that the transmission filter had a faulty anti drainback valve that would allow the torque converter to drain while the engine is off. They should change your filters under warranty, unless your vechicle is out of the range of affected parts.

CATCRD, I'm getting my tanny fluid changed is that one of the filters they will replace anyway?
Any clues why I didn't notice the problem until I'd driven 16,000 miles and over 6,000 since f37?

Crazy car, I still love it even with some small annoyances?

I can't think of any reason why it would just start suddenly. There are 2 filters, one is a traditional pop-in felt type, and the other is a spin-on like a small oil filter.
