Post subject:  What's the Problem?

I recently towed my trailer (2K) over a 200 mi. route of mountains and elevation changes, which I've traveled with trailer many times before. When I tow, I always do so with the OD off, and the Liberty has never labored at all. This time, however, with OD off it kept changing gears. The tach would crank up to 3600rpm, then drop back to 2500rpm, then back and forth for as long as I was pulling a hill. The shifts happened maybe every 5-10 seconds.

I took it to the dealer and of course (6K from end of warranty) they gave me the "cannot duplicate" bit. They refused my offer to drive with them and the trailer hooked up along the same route. I suggested that the tranny pump might be weak. There reply was "Either it works or it doesn't, and if it doesn't you stop moving."

Any suggestions? I'll put in the Suncoast TC, a shift kit and the redesigned pump eventually, but would like DC to take care of business while the warranty lasts.

Fortunately - or unfortunately, depending on your perspective - MrMoservice is correct - slip-surging would indicate transmission problems, staying in the same gear but rpm increases due to slipping - that would give a DTC or few.

From your description it seems power related, or rather lack of power related - #1 winterized fuel, air\fuel filter, etc - air filter would result in black smoke, reduced power - fuel filter would be reduced power - winterized fuel is reduced power - load of bad fuel is reduced power.

All resulting in ECM looking for optimum gear range required to keep vehicle moving under varying load conditions.

I would also vote for winter fuel and perhaps in conjucntion with a dirty air filter. One other thought is to check the tire pressure as they really drop in cold weather. When we go north to Montana, I can really tell the differance as soon as I hit a station with winter blend.

FYI, My GC HEMI does the same thing with winterized gas when towing our 6K TT.

I had the same experience pulling my trailer before I added a lift pump

My dealer's tech must have watched the same 1 hour video

Get a intank lift pump, it's starved for fuel. You can bleed the filter housing as a test  I added a posi-flow external pump but for a cleaner setup I'm planning on replacing it with the dodge cummins intank lift pump

Mine gets gutless first, then it will start stuttering. I try to make sure I burp the air out before that happens. After burping everything is back to normal. I am getting a lift pump, and I am getting a real diesel mechanic to diagnose the proper fixes needed to the fuel system and install the pump-- next month. I should have the money by then. Drove mine 3,000 miles on my vacation and other than having to bleed air every tankful and an electrical gremlin, it ran great.
