| Post subject: | Dealer sold me non-CI+4 mobil oil |
I bought 5 QTs of mobil 1 full-syn at the JEEP dealer to use on my oil change, the guy KNEW i had the CRD because I got a bunch of other stuff too. I already had a few QTS of rotella 5-40 CI+4. after I tipped in the fifth bottle of the mobil I look at the label and it is NOT CI+4 rated. I have to drive home tonight on it but is this worth getting a refund from the dealer? I don't want the oil to gum up from soot because its not rated for diesel. any helpful suggestions? |

That dilution won't affect much unless you're towing, with resultant high EGT and turbo temps - anyway, CI+4 has been up(down)graded to CJ+4, with reduced zddp and other protective stuff. If the rating is less than CH+4, then imo he owes you a 'nuther oil change - if he squawks and refuses, just add ~4oz of STP to bring up the level of protection. |

I'm curious, what oil did you get? |

I'm guessing they sold you Mobil1 0W-40, which is not CI+4 rated. Nonetheless, it is the oil that is specified by Jeep for use in the CRD, and according to the oil analysis I had done last May, it works fine if the factory-specified oil change interval is followed. |

Ditto. When I saw our dealer refilling the CRD with Mobil 1 0W40 during one of our early oil changes, I questioned whether it was a diesel-rated oil. They brought up the "approved oils" information on their service computer, and it showed Mobil 1 0W40 listed plain as day for the 2.8L diesel. - Chris |

If it was Mobil 1 0W-40 then you can relax http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/ ... _0W-40.asp It is rated for ACEA B4 which is what says in my manual is the equivalent of CI-4. |

the dealer set me strait. the Chrysler/JEEP recommended oil is API-CL/CF, which is the oil he sold me. I guess with all the talk on here about CI+4 being the oil to use, I was just confused. |

I think that the 0w-40 is an old diesel formula that it does not take the soot of the EGR valve. You have to use the new Cl-4 or the CJ-4 that they have today. I does not matter what wait 5w-40 or 15w-40 as long it is synthetic. I am in Florida so for me I use the 15w-40 and it work just fine. |

I know of one owner that e-mailed VM Motori, asking about the recommended types of oils for this engine. He said the answer he got back was that on the marine version of this engine, WITHOUT an EGR, the recommended oil was 10W40 CF rated. If you dig up the service info on Cat, Cummins, and Detroit Diesel OTR engines, according to them CF rated oil is good for nothing but bulldozers and generators - strictly off-road use in older precombustion chamber indirect injection non-EGR non-CCV type diesels. In their service info, Cat all but says they'll void your engine warranty on the spot if they catch you using a CF rated oil in one of their OTR engines. The more recent oil ratings such as CI-4 and later were developed with direct injection, EGR, and closed CCV in mind, in particular when combined with the comparitively low grade diesel fuel we have in this country - to handle the increased amount of soot loading from the EGR and lower volatility to decrease the amount of oil fumes being sucked thru your CCV and into your air intake. In Europe, they have higher quality fuel, and a lower EGR duty cycle due to different emissions regs - all of which contribute to lower soot loading and acid buildup in the oil. Running the ORM/SEGR full time is definitely going to improve matters if you're running CF rated oil. Oil types and ratings are like religion and guaranteed to start arguments. Best I can say is, while 0W40 CF rated is what DC specs, like many other items on this beast - torque converter, Provent, fuel filter, lift pump - where we've found that we can do DC one better, running a CI-4 or higher rated oil is only going to be an improvement and IMHO is a good way to CYA for the type of engine we have. |
