 Post subject: Installing a tranny cooler. Any suggestions?

I have purchased the parts and am intent on installing a tranny cooler behind the front bumper, just under the existing radiators.

This is the parts list from Summit

DER-13225 FRAME RAIL COOLER KIT 1
SUM-220633-2B 6 AN TUBE NUTS 2PK BLK 2
SUM-220634-2B 6 AN TUBE SLEEVES 2PK BLK 2
SUM-220756 TWIST-TITE -6/-6 ADAPTER 2

It is the 24" rail cooler with the -6 AN compression fittings.
I plan to splice into the supply side tranny hose.
I will use barbed fittings (twist tite) to go from stock 3/8 hose to -6 AN fittings, then Aluminum tubing (soft) to make the transition to the cooler (involves two 180 deg bends, hence the Aluminum tubing rather than hose). I will flare the tubing at 37 deg once I can find the darn tool here in town.

I will have to design some brackets once I get the cooler and do some fitment.

I am not sure of the dissipative power capacity as compared to the stock, but by surface area, I am adding about 15%. Keeping in mind that the AC and the tranny share a radiator, and that the new radiator is not directly fan cooled, I might venture a guess that I am adding %15 cooling capacity to the tranny.

I may add in a port for tranny fluid temp measurements ( I might add inlet and outlet, just to get an idea of the effectiveness).

Any suggestions?

It may have 15% more surface area but putting it behind the bumber you will loose about 50%-75% cooling to it since the lack of air flowing over/through it.Keep the factory cooler and run the new cooler in tandum.

With a cold vehicle start it up and let idle for about 5-10min,shut off and then feel the tranny cooler lines,the warmer one is the in line and the cooler one is the return line.Hook the new cooler into the return line to increase the cooling effect,just extend the return line and hook up to the return line coming off the OEM cooler,then the output of the new cooler back to the OEM return line.A much better setup and more effective.

Ya, I was planning on just adding the new cooler in series with the stock. I wanted to put it on the inlet side (the first to see the hot fluid) so the AC condenser sees lower temperatures (the AC shares the radiator with the tranny cooler).

Ya, the way I describe the install (behind the bumper) is not exactly right. It is in pretty exposed area just below the intercooler radiator. Hard to describe. Still, not the optimum for high air flow rates, however.
