Post subject:  Possible new fuel filter assemblie from Chrysler

I read this over on the other forum written by a Tech in Britten.

Hi
I believe they have now tried and test a replacement filter head that will be out soon that comes with a new wiring plug for the heater.
Regards,
Merlin

Maybe because they avoided a recall on the filterhead once and didn't want to press their luck on a second investigation

I put in a report with the NHTSA for my filter head and sent them pictures. I couldn't get the old part, so the pictures were the best I could do.

I really hope they upgrade the unit. I don't even mind paying for it if it's a quality piece.

From the way Merlin talks in the rest of that thread, I'm not going to hold my breath. As one other poster put it, he seems to have a big time case of the "how dare you modify OUR vehicle!" attitude, going to lengths to talk down the idea of a lift pump and pulling out the old voided warranty voodoo doll.

Then again, UK laws regarding vehicle warranties, defective equipment, and recalls may be significantly different, and the CRD is still in production for Europe and other parts of the world. Even if they're "in the clear" for at least the time being in the U.S., they may still be facing potential recalls in other countries.

What I could see happening is a redesigned filter assembly and some form of CSN put out for export model CRD's (ie, those sold outside the U.S.), while the owners of the limited production run here in the U.S. are left hanging because NHTSA has already ruled there isn't a problem and therefore no need for Chrysler to spend the money on a recall - at least not unless NHTSA takes a second look and changes it's mind.

When word starts wafting thru the grapevine that NHTSA may be taking a second look at this, that's when I'd expect to see a redesigned filter offered in this country. Word from a reputable source is that Cerberus is so far in the red over bad subprime debt that they've cut Chrysler's budget to the bone, are trying to raise operating cash by selling off hard assets such as land and factories at bargain prices, and have canceled all future development work at Chrysler - vehicles, engines, etc - until 2012.

If they're that hard up for money, I don't see them spending the cash on a fuel filter recall unless they're forced to.

Agreed, I dont mean to speak ill of anyone behind their back, but that is the feeling I have gotten several times from him.

As a DCJ* certified tech, he's required to hold the line, to toe the mark, to espouse the party dogma - can't blame him for being in the CYA mode in order to ensure his continued livelyhood, eh...............

Nothing like keeping faith in the infallible manufacturer in the face of facts to the contrary. There is simply no argument about how the design of the factory filter, not to mention the lack of lift pump is junk.

Didn't say that the gent didn't know anything, just that in this particular case he was emulating a farmer cleaning out a horse stall.

gmctd probably called it - when you get up to the level of having "senior" tacked onto your title in the business world, or most any profession for that matter, you have to become to some degree a political animal and play the game at least to enough of a degree to keep your job and watch what you say publicly, or you'll soon be switching professions.

That's why after 20 years of operating naval nuclear power plants, I decided to take a 9 to 5 job building trucks instead of trying to get on at a civilian nuke power plant - I was sick and tired of all the high-level 24/7 politics that went with it.

While the vehicle may not be designed how YOU would like it designed, it is actually designed just fine for the vast majority of its users. Most will never have a need for a lift pump or better filter.

Retmil - Your cynicism is depressing. I know plenty of people who get where they are because of a love for thier work and knowledge of what they work on. Having had two siblings in the military services(one Naval Intelligence, one Army 82nd Airborne) I can see how you'd have that feeling though, the stories they have told about how to get ahead in the military are just sad. I certainly don't know the guy in question, but I think its overly cynical to assume that just because he has strong opinions that you do not agree with it is because either he is 'playing the corporate game' or 'part of the DCX coverup'. Sometimes people just have strong opinions based on experience, even if it disagrees with the conclusions you draw from your own experience.

Guys. Just consider Merlin's position and read between the lines :!: It's clear he knows there's a problem and is being a true professional and giving a politicaly correct answer. For many years my job required I give a "company answer" when a design "short coming" showed up for a customer  Just like our CRD's some users had not yet experienced the problems their equiptment had but the possability was still there

On the "other site" there was a person just like someone here who kept going on about how our problems were all imagined. The last post I remember from him was "any more problems with this thing and it's out of here"

Exactly what I and gmctd were trying to get across. No one said the man wasn't a professional, wasn't knowledgeable, and didn't enjoy his work - just that in this case, from all appearances, he was having to grit his teeth, watch his words, and say nothing more than the company spiel regarding a problem that has already been the target of a government inquiry by NHTSA.

I'd imagine that he might be getting his tucas chewed off for even hinting at the possibility of a redesigned fuel filter on a public forum.

Being in the IT biz, I can tell you that you CAN be tracked. I used to work for a major national retailer and when they were about to enter bankruptcy, an employee posted a "warning" for everyone to sell their stock.

The FTC came to us, and we had to trace the IP address of the poster (which came back to our company address) and from there we schlogged through DHCP logs and found the culprit then discovered that he had been to that site in his Internet history.

Even if you delete it, it's not really deleted. Anyone can buy a program that will recover "deleted" data. They are commonplace.

I completely understand anyone who uses discretion when posting online. Privacy Nazis are only fooling themselves. There is no more privacy. Welcome to the information age. :)

Well - I almost logged in as Morgan LeFaye, but I tho't that would be a bit much, eh?

Opened the thread, posted the link, then realized that forum is on the official DCJ site, and the lift pump thread has Sir Sam's links to FSM's and SPM's - woah! major faux pas, no? Yes? Beat a hasty retreat to the EDIT button, and all's well that ends well. But, now they gotta small sampling of real hard-core Jeepin'!

Nice post and no responses as of yet... I imagine it's a little less active than LOST... It'll be interesting to see a response on the "the logic, fuse, wiring, etc is all included" part
