The 52079697AB Trans cooler I'm assuming is for the gas models? Has anyone tried to put this on the diesel? I'm wondering if it would bolt up? Thanks Pete |

All Liberty diesels came with a trans cooler already... just kind of half-assed, doubles as the AC condenser. If one wanted to upgrade (assuming you do a lot of towing), an aftermarket cooler with a dedicated fan would be the way to go. |

Why do people diss the stock trans cooler? I have a temp gauge and don't see any issues with trans temps.... |

You would need to be towing in heat of summer to determine total suitability - Diesel's put out a small percentage of their total BTU capability when unloaded - 'nuther words, you'll need to work the little mule to see it work up a sweat. |

Well, load it up with 5000lbs of 'em, stacked high and wide as a RV trailer for really good aerodynamics, head out thru serious hill country for a whole new sense of how 900cuin of diesel 6cyl hauls a tractor with 80000lbs hanging off the back of it across country, 24hrs a day, 365 - and, a whole new respect for charge-air coolers and transmission coolers - make it crank out some therms, where coolant temp heads up to 210*F and stays there, and EGT's are runnin' ~950-1050*F, kickin' back on ~20psi continuous Boost - make the little mule sweat, 'stead of just lopin' along for it's casual daily trot at ~350-450*F EGT.......... |

Sounds like fun. You have a sister? Edit, maybe a daughter would have fit the cliche better here. |

Oh well I had some towing fun this weekend. Towed about 2 tonnes of horsetrailer with horses in it through town up and down some nice little hills. Jeep did great, no overtemp of any sort. Only hit the middle of the engine temp gauge. Would have loved to have an SGII to monitor my trans temp and real engine temp. Plenty of power in the KJ for me. It is so much better than the 2.8 Patrol it replaced. |

Agreed. I never had a good appreciation for the sustained power required for towing until we started towing our 5000lb 26' travel trailer. We're pretty much in sustained boost all the time except coasting down hills. I realized that at least for our CRDs, it's not so much the weight of the trailer as much as the drag that makes it work hard. - Chris |

I diss the stock cooler design because it is another bean-counter compromise. For everyday driving and light towing, our rigs don't need a cooler at all. But Chrysler advertised our Jeeps as little tow devils, so they put a "cooler" on it that is really some xtra fins on an AC condenser. For towing circumstances where you really need it, a cooler ought to have enough surface area and a dedicated fan so that it can substantially moderate temps. High tranny temps are the #1 killer of auto transmissions, and high temps kick in most when towing up steep grades for sustained periods (ie, towing pretty much anywhere in Oregon). Given the fragility of our trannys in stock form, if I were looking to upgrade I'd go with the beefiest cooler I could fit in the Jeep. |

You are probably right, as even though I'm close to total weight as you when I tow, mine is a bit more aerodynamic.
