Hello all,
I am, unfortunatly, one of the many that have the CEL come on and my CRD throws the code P0299. I have a scan guage and and reset it as needed. After reading many threads within the forums, I've grown to not be concerned about it. So heres the scenario; I'm on the east coast and drive everywhere under 2k feet sea level. The wife and I recently drove out to Colorado from the east coast and when we got anywhere above 4k ft sea level the CEL NEVER came on. For the entire duration of our 7 day stay up at altitude the CEL never came on. (which has also been the longest duration. Even when I got it from the dealer it came on within 2 days) Then when we returned back to our O2 enriched environment, the CEL came back on, like usual, ever time my CRD is turned on.
Any thoughts or or 2 cents on the matter would be helpful. Thanks

P0299 is turbo underboost
Clean the MAP
Check air filter
check or replace boost pressure solenoid filter.
Forgot any?

Ok, so today I tightend all of the clamps on the intake system. At least half of them needed 1.5 turns. (i really didn't think it would matter but I tried it anyway) Before today I was reading about 16.3 psi on my scan guage. After taking care of the clamps today, I'm now showing a MAX reading, on my SG2, of 20.1 psi. Can anyone tell me what the Max turbo PSI is supposed to be? I've been searching all over the forums today and I can't seem to find this answer. Perhaps I'm having a brain fart but I'm not having much luck. Any help or input would greatly appreciated. TY

guage pressure will be dependent on atmospheric pressure.

Well I'm less then 75ft to sea level. So I should be at 14.7 = 1 ATA. I've also noticed that my CAC tube from my turbo to my intercooler is covered with a light oil and dirt combo. I removed, cleaned and inspected for holes and cracks with a dye penetrant and found that all is ok. Any idea what that might be from?

Is there a chart out there somewhere that shows what the boost psig min-max should be for specific altitude ranges?

Not much way to verify the MAP sensor output butcept substitution, but it could have developed an offset - ECM uses it for Baro during WTS, then MAP when engine is started, so any offset is compounded.

Might also check vacuum pump output for 26"HG at idle and 2000rpm

Anectodally, if you have had the F37 or F31 flashes, 21psig boost sounds about right. Before those flashes people were reporting about 26psig.

Hmmm.... I've never had any of the flashes but that's not to say it was done previous to my ownership. I bought my KJ after my return from my lengthy "vacation" in Iraq. That was in Dec 06/Jan 07 and it was from a dealer... no stickers or placards were placed in the engine bay and the dealers records did not show this info. Is there any other way I can tell if these flashes were completed?

How would I go about checking the vacuum pump output? I could not find a post on this subject. Are there any special tools required other then a vacuum guage?

My SG2 actually displays around 35 PSI on WOT here in Dallas.. which is like 500 ft above sea level. So, I think it's more like 20.3 PSI when I take out atmospheric pressure.

I get about 20PSI as well on my 03. Recently installed my boost gauge in the inlet manifold. I'm sure you shouldn't take atm into account, the boost you have is the one you have - it is true that the turbo pressurizes the atm pressure, so you can probably add them together.

I have a question though, why is it important to take atm pressure into account? Your engine sees the inlet pressure and doesn't care if you're at sealevel or not (if it wasn't for the oxygen concentration difference this would be true :))

Most people speak in terms of pressure ABOVE that of atmospheric pressure, so it's helpful to subtract the 14.7 sea level psi from discussions of turbo boost pressure.

I got that code a few thousand miles ago. It was the vacuum line to the turbo that was causing the problem. Replaced and it corrected.

That's good info to know. I'll be checking the vacuum lines after the crazy wind calms down a bit. FYI, after I tightend all the clamps, my CEL has not come back on. Seems like the 2.1-2.5 PSI made all the difference.

Well as of yesterday, I got the code again. (P0299) and I get it every time I turn over the engine. I'm going to be checking the vacuum line(s) today. I hope the vacuum line does the trick because the wife and I are really considering trading the the CRD for another VW TDI. :( I really love my CRD but I'm only considering this option because of the cost of increasing fuel prices... and we all know that they are NOT going to decrease. I get, on average, 49.2 mpg in my 2002 VW TDI and that always makes me grin like a happy retard eating cake. (I'm truly sorry if I offended any retard that may read this post but it was only a figure of speech.)
Has anyone tried any Hydrogen/O2 producers for any of their vehicles? I am posting links below to 2 companies that I am considering in case anyone else would like to do some research. Hopefully, this could offset any mileage difference. ANY and ALL input is greatly appreciated.

I changed out the vacuum line but the CEL is still coming on. Any other advice that could help remedy this?

Try replacing the MAP sensor?

I've heard it's only $50-60 at the dealer.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. It was the boost control solenoid. It is number 16 on this link
